An Open Letter to Congressman Richard Gomez

Dear Hon. Richard "GOMA" Gomez,

Maayong adlaw,

Respectfully yours,

Ang 86,695 ka Ormocanon nga mibotar kang Bise Presidente Sara Duterte (2022)

Let us stand for FAIRNESS,
Let us uphold DUE PROCESS,
Let us choose UNITY over DIVISION.

For Ormoc, for the people and for the FUTURE.

Leyte Mayor Subpoenaed as Missing Sabungeros Case Widens

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Justice (DOJ) has subpoenaed Matag-ob, Leyte Mayor Bernardino “Bernie” Tacoy in connection with the ongoing probe into the disappearance of several sabungeros (cockfighting enthusiasts).

In a subpoena dated September 8 and received at Tacoy’s office on September 11, prosecutors ordered the mayor to appear on September 18 and October 13, 2025, at the DOJ in Manila to submit his counter-affidavit. The order warned that failure to comply would be deemed a waiver of his right to present a defense, and the cases would proceed based on available evidence.

Tacoy, known as one of Eastern Visayas’ prominent cockfighting aficionados, has previously denied allegations linking him to the case after being mentioned by Julie “Dondon” Patidongan, alias “Totoy,” who also tagged retired police general Jonnel Estomo.

The subpoena highlights how the missing sabungeros case—a controversy that has gripped the nation since 2022—continues to widen, now pulling in local political figures alongside high-profile personalities from the cockfighting industry.

The UPAGC makes a compelling case against the Sanggunian Bayan’s Resolution No. 094-150925 because selective accountability is indeed a dangerous form of governance. If the council truly intends to uphold transparency and protect public interest, it cannot single out the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) while turning a blind eye to alleged abuses and environmental destruction happening under its own nose in Palompon.

Targeting only national agencies gives the impression of political grandstanding, not genuine public service. Worse, it risks eroding public trust by showing that accountability is applied only when it is politically convenient. Corruption and abuse do not stop at overpriced projects—they include environmental exploitation, governance failures, and the misuse of local authority.

The letter is right in pointing out that the people of Palompon face urgent problems like flooding, ecosystem collapse, and livelihood losses. These issues strike at the daily survival of citizens far more directly than disputed contract costs. To focus solely on DPWH projects while ignoring local governance failures is not only diversionary but also a betrayal of the people’s most pressing needs.

If the Sanggunian Bayan is serious about integrity, it must broaden its scope and ensure accountability across the board—whether in the DPWH, among contractors, or within the municipal government itself. Anything less smacks of hypocrisy.

True transparency means shining the light everywhere, not just where it is politically advantageous.

Blood Moon Eclipse to Illuminate Philippine Skies on September 7–8

Filipinos will witness a rare astronomical event on the night of September 7–8, 2025, as a total lunar eclipse, also known as a Blood Moon, becomes fully visible across the country. The phenomenon occurs when the Moon passes completely into Earth’s shadow, causing it to glow in shades of red and copper. This particular eclipse will feature a totality lasting about 82 minutes, making it one of the longest in recent years.

The Philippines is among the best locations to view the entire event from start to finish, along with other regions in Asia, Australia, eastern Africa, and parts of Europe. Astronomers emphasize that the eclipse can be safely viewed without any special equipment, though dark and open spaces away from city lights will provide the clearest view. The event is expected to draw widespread attention, both for its scientific value and its cultural significance.

Rep. Gomez Hits Back at Mayor Tacoy Over Flood Control Project Claims

Leyte 4th District Representative Richard Gomez has fired back at Matag-ob Mayor Bernie Tacoy following the latter’s statements questioning the legitimacy and implementation of a flood control project in the municipality.

In a strong rebuttal, Gomez accused Tacoy of spreading misleading information about the project, stressing that government initiatives undergo proper evaluation and funding processes. He maintained that the flood control works are vital for protecting communities in Matag-ob against recurring flooding and should not be politicized.

The lawmaker further called on local leaders to focus on cooperation rather than sowing discord, pointing out that infrastructure projects are meant to benefit constituents, not to be used as political ammunition. Gomez vowed to continue defending programs that safeguard the welfare of his district.
