Gatchalian Takes Oath as Senate President Pro Tempore
MANILA, Philippines — Senator Sherwin Gatchalian officially took his oath as Senate President Pro Tempore, assuming one of the highest leadership positions in the Philippine Senate and reinforcing his role in shaping the chamber's legislative agenda.
The oath-taking ceremony marked a significant milestone in Gatchalian's legislative career, as he formally accepted the responsibility of serving as the Senate's second-highest-ranking official. The position places him next in line to preside over Senate sessions in the absence of the Senate President and grants him a key role in the chamber's leadership and decision-making processes.

BREAKING NEWS

Naglabas ng warrant of arrest ang 2nd Division ng Sandiganbayan laban kay Jinggoy Estrada ngayong Biyernes, Mayo 29, kaugnay ng kinakaharap nitong kasong graft dahil sa umano’y pagkakasangkot sa kontrobersyal na flood control corruption scandal.

Ayon sa ulat, ang kaso ay may kaugnayan sa umano’y anomalya sa paggamit ng pondo para sa mga flood control projects. Sa kabila nito, ang graft ay isang bailable offense, kaya maaari pa ring makapagpiyansa ang senador habang nagpapatuloy ang pagdinig ng kaso.

Sa ngayon, wala pang inilalabas na opisyal na pahayag si Estrada hinggil sa inilabas na warrant of arrest.

Patuloy namang inaabangan ng publiko ang susunod na hakbang ng kampo ng senador at ang magiging pag-usad ng kaso sa Sandiganbayan.

Mahigit 1.3 Milyong Grade 11 Students sa Pilipinas, Hirap Umanong Umintindi ng Binabasa — EDCOM 2

MANILA, Philippines — Nakababahala ang naging pahayag ng Second Congressional Commission on Education o EDCOM 2 matapos nitong ibunyag na tinatayang mahigit 1.3 milyong Grade 11 students sa bansa ang nahihirapang umintindi ng kanilang binabasa.

Batay sa ulat na iniulat sa programang “Saksi” ng GMA News, ipinakita ng pag-aaral ng EDCOM 2 na maraming senior high school students ang hindi pa rin nakakamit ang inaasahang antas ng reading comprehension, isang mahalagang kasanayan para sa mas mataas na pag-aaral at paghahanda sa trabaho.

Ayon sa komisyon, bagama’t marunong bumasa ang maraming estudyante, malaking bilang sa kanila ang hindi lubos na nauunawaan ang nilalaman ng kanilang binabasa.

Tinukoy ito bilang “functional illiteracy,” kung saan kaya ng isang tao na magbasa ng mga salita ngunit hirap naman sa pag-intindi, pagsusuri, at paglalapat ng impormasyon.

Sinabi ng EDCOM 2 na ang sitwasyong ito ay maaaring magdulot ng mas malalim na problema sa kalidad ng edukasyon sa bansa, lalo na sa senior high school level kung saan inaasahang handa na ang mga mag-aaral para sa kolehiyo o trabaho.

Ilan sa mga nakikitang dahilan ng problema ay ang epekto ng learning loss noong panahon ng pandemya, kakulangan sa learning materials, limitadong access sa dekalidad na edukasyon, at kakulangan sa sapat na reading intervention programs sa mga paaralan.

Dahil dito, nananawagan ang EDCOM 2 sa Department of Education at iba pang ahensya ng gobyerno na palakasin pa ang literacy programs, teacher training, at learning recovery initiatives upang matulungan ang mga estudyanteng nahuhuli sa pagkatuto.

Binigyang-diin din ng komisyon na mahalagang tutukan ang pundasyon ng pagbabasa at pag-unawa habang nasa mababang baitang pa lamang ang mga mag-aaral upang maiwasan ang paglala ng problema pagdating nila sa higher education.

Samantala, umani naman ng iba’t ibang reaksyon mula sa publiko ang naturang ulat. Marami ang nagpahayag ng pagkabahala sa estado ng edukasyon sa bansa, habang may ilan ding nananawagan ng mas malaking pondo at agarang aksyon mula sa pamahalaan upang masolusyunan ang lumalalang krisis sa literacy ng mga kabataan.

Patuloy namang pinag-aaralan ng mga kinauukulang ahensya ang mga hakbang upang mapabuti ang kalidad ng edukasyon at matiyak na walang batang maiiwan sa pagkatuto.

The house is owned by a relative (uncle) of Senator Robinhood Padilla.
