“The Filipinos are worth dying for.”

This famous line was delivered by the late senator Benigno Aquino Jr. in hopes of achieving national reconciliation with the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr., but he was shot dead by an assailant on the tarmac of what was then called Manila International Airport upon his return to the country on August 21, 1983.

42 years later, the Philippines is still grappling with the never-ending issues of corruption, misuse of funds, and unaddressed problems brought by extreme poverty aggravated by the persistent existence of corruption in this country. The billions of flood control projects that were wasted due to corruption serve as a silent voice of this sickening malady in our town. Time has changed but things have not. Corruption managed to prosper and became a norm followed by wannabes in the field of politics. They believed that public service offers monetary rewards, allowing even a novice politician to access funds from the public coffers. We still suffer the same problems he fought for the Filipinos back then. Where are we now in the world? Time is so constant but not the kind of people we have in the government. Intergovernmental corruption measures are present, but we have not seen any improvements in the actions of our people in the government. Corruption is thriving, and its effects are felt by people regardless of their educational and political backgrounds.

We hold the power to effect change. We are the creators of our stories. We are the creators of anti-corruption measures. We are the ones who say that “Filipinos are worth dying for.”

Mabuhay ang isang Ninoy Aquino!
