Balancing academic pressure with a healthy life is a tightrope walk many students fear, but Joana Aragon turned that tightrope into a path to triumph.
Joana Rochelle Lyn Aragon, fondly hailed as the next 'saint' of Saint Paul School of Professional Studies, graduated Summa Cum Laude from the BS Accountancy program on May 3. Throughout her academic journey, she consistently stood out among her peers, not out of a need to compete, but because excellence is simply woven into who she is: diligent, determined, and remarkably humble despite her many achievements.
She did not initially dream of becoming an accountant as a child. Her first taste of passion came from standing behind a podium, not a spreadsheet.
โIt was during my junior high school years when my Araling Panlipunan teacher suggested I participate in a debate competition. Initially hesitant, the promise of an exam exemption swayed me,โ she admits.
What began as a reluctant favor turned into a passion. From that moment, everything changed. Fueled by her love for public speaking, she went on to win regional and national competitions, gradually envisioning a future in law. Encouraged by her debate mentor, who suggested that an Accounting degree would be a strong foundation for a legal career, Joana took a decisive step toward her dream by enrolling at Saint Paul School of Professional Studies.
In the institution, she further emphasized that her skills would not have been honed to their best without the help of her teachers. Additionally, because of the language barrier, Joana would have slight difficulties addressing her queries and concerns at the Accountancy department. However, all of the professors in there allowed her to speak her local dialect, showed support in whatever way they could โ from letting her borrow their books or simply just by answering her questions, it all helped Joana attain the academic excellence she is proudly known for. Indeed, it takes a village to raise a victor.
Though her original dream was to enter the legal profession, Joana's path took a turn as she immersed herself deeper into Accountancy. She also came to terms with the fact that law might not be her strongest suit, especially after struggling with related subjects in her undergraduate studies. The turning point came when she failed her RFBT Comprehensive Exam. Despite the shift in direction, Joana pressed on and still graduated with flying colors.
While many might assume that Joanaโs accomplishments stem purely from sheer intelligence, she is the first to acknowledge that they are, in fact, the result of countless sacrifices. She rarely goes out with her friends on weekends. Moreover, because of the constant fast food takeouts, she has developed multiple illnesses, ranging from urinary tract infection (UTI) to multiple ovarian cysts. As the eldest child in her family from Ormoc, she often faced gentle pleas from her mother to come home during holidays or breaks. But for Joana, even a moment away from her books felt like falling behind. Choosing discipline over comfort, she stayed in Palo, immersed herself in test banks and textbooks, and kept her eyes firmly set on one goalโto become a Certified Public Accountant.
With graduation behind her, sheโs now setting her sights on the CPA Board Exams. Her motivation hasnโt waned; itโs simply evolved. When asked about what life or study advice she would like to say for those who are still trekking the roads she once walked, her answer was:
โTake your health seriously. Go on spontaneous trips with your friends. Comfortably enjoy rest days. Life doesnโt give you a special treatment if you ace your academics.โ
Joana's journey is a reminder that success isnโt just earned in silenceโitโs built in the choices we make when no oneโs watching. The Joana Standard, summarized by the diva herself: Embrace the program so excellence can find its way to you.
