A Medalya ng Kadakilaan (PNP Heroism Medal) was posthumously awarded to Patrolman Mark Gomer Amancio Ornopia as officials from the Philippine National Police and the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) visited his wake in Tabogon, Cebu on July 1, 2025, to honor his bravery and ultimate sacrifice.

The medal was personally awarded to his wife by PMGEN Constancio T. Chinayog Jr., Presidential Management Staff representative Jesmart Kent A. Embelino, NAPOLCOM Vice Chair and Executive Officer Atty. Alberto A. Calinisan, and other members of the official party. During the visit, cash assistance was also handed over to the bereaved family as part of the government's continuing support.

To recall, Patrolman Ornopia was killed on June 27, 2025, during an armed confrontation in Danao City, Cebu, after courageously responding to a suspect who had forcibly taken a pawnshop guard’s firearm and opened fire during a pursuit. Despite the risk, Pat. Ornopia and a BJMP personnel pursued the suspect, who fatally shot the police officer before being neutralized. Both were rushed to the hospital but were declared dead due to their injuries.

His swift and decisive action reflects the Philippine National Police’s commitment to the 5-minute response directive of CPNP PGen Nicolas D. Torre III and affirms one of the Chief PNP’s core pillars, which is to deliver swift and responsive public service. This incident underscores the importance of timely and courageous police intervention in protecting the lives of the public.

PRO7 Regional Director PBGEN Redrico A. Maranan also led a tribute and personally handed over cash assistance on June 30, to the bereaved family as a gesture of solidarity and support.

He expressed the heartfelt condolences of the entire police force, stating, “We salute the bravery of our personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice just to ensure the safety of the residents of Danao. His dedication and courage exemplify the highest ideals of the Philippine National Police.”

He also assured that other appropriate assistance and benefits will be provided to help the family through their time of grief.

The Philippine National Police remains committed to honoring its fallen heroes and ensuring that their legacy of courage and service lives on.

Philippine National Police Chief General Nicolas Torre III is considering reviewing the PNP’s standard operating procedures and equipment after two police officers were killed while in the line of duty.

Torre said this in an interview with reporters in Camp Karingal in Quezon City on Tuesday, after visiting the wake of Patrolman Harwin Curtney Baggay, who was gunned down by a robber in Barangay Commonwealth early Monday morning.

“We are going to review our procedures, our equipment, and whether it will help to have additional armoring for our personnel,” the PNP chief said.

“It’s not even a consolation that his killer was killed. We are saddened, but we celebrate his heroism. Truly, that is a life offered in service of others,” Torre stressed.

After Baggay was shot, he and his partner officer, Pat. Robert Gregorio, managed to fire back and kill the gunman.

The PNP chief also cited the killing of Pat. Mark Ornopia Sr., who was shot dead after pursuing a homeless man who was attempting to flee after snatching the service firearm of a security guard in Danao City last Friday.

Torre also said, in response, the police will intensify its anti-illegal fi****ms campaign.

During his visit, the PNP chief awarded Baggay with a posthumous Medalya ng Kadakilaan (Heroism Medal) and gave the patrolman’s parents over P340,000 in financial assistance from the Public Safety Mutual Benefit Fund.

Further, Torre awarded Gregorio with the Medalya ng Kagalingan (Medal of Merit).

According to the PNP chief, spot promotions for the two officers will be processed, but he stressed: “There is no question that they deserve it.”
