A male Varied Thrush perches on a mossy branch in the temperate rainforest understory of southwestern British Columbia.

Undoubtedly one of Canada's most beautiful birds, made all the more alluring by their timid, secretive nature, and eerie song. Their time is generally spent in the darkest corners of our wettest forests, where they forage on the ground by moving leaf litter aside in a constant search for invertebrates. Varied Thrushes are not only a challenge to photograph by virtue of their preference for dense habitat where lighting is typically dismal, they're also very wary of people. However, during heavy snowfall, when our lowlands become inundated with thrushes from higher elevations, their feeding opportunities become limited and their temperaments change. Fruiting trees, backyard feeders, and scattered patches of exposed forest floor become magnets for these birds. Earlier this past winter, during a spell of very cold weather, I came across a situation that I thought might make the types of images I'm after possible. After about eight or so hours sitting in the snow, I came away with a few nice frames and an even greater appreciation for these beauties.

I've just finished up five weeks of guiding group and private workshops here in the Vancouver area. I'll be showcasing a handful of new images, and information on how to register for next year's Winter Birds of Vancouver Photo Workshops in an upcoming newsletter.
