My Battle with GERD: How and When It Started
Back in 2022, I decided to get a general check-up because I kept experiencing sharp abdominal pain — sometimes on the right, left, sometimes behind my back near my kidneys. I also suffered from skin rashes and persistent itchiness in my private area. My laboratory results showed only mild fatty liver and a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). I completed my medication and recovered.
However, over time, my symptoms returned along with new health concerns. I was treated repeatedly for UTI and high uric acid levels. But the condition requiring the longest ongoing treatment is GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). It began with constipation: frequent but difficult bowel movements (inability to defecate properly), because of my severe acid reflux which also triggered my insomnia and anxiety.
Last February 2026, I decided to strictly discipline myself. I completely eliminated trigger foods and drinks: coffee, milk tea, sodas, tomatoes, spicy foods, coconut milk-based dishes, chocolates, and citrus fruits. Honestly, I sometimes feel I barely have anything left to eat due to so many food restrictions.
I also tested positive for H. pylori bacteria. After completing antibiotic treatment, follow-up tests came back negative, yet my stomach pain, constipation, and irregular bowel movements persisted.
I was officially diagnosed with GERD. My doctor advised me to undergo an endoscopy for proper assessment and correct medication.
To be honest, the cost of that kind of procedure is quite expensive, and I am terrified of what the result might be.
Currently, my most distressing symptom (which causes great my anxiety) is the dryness of my throat and mouth, and the sensation of always having food/phlegm stuck in my throat, especially after eating or drinking something cold. Recently, I have also noticed my hearing is slightly affected.
My gentle reminder to everyone: Nwver ignore your body's warning signs. If you experience similar symptoms, do not ignore them. Seek medical attention immediately before it worsens. Living with GERD is truly exhausting and difficult.
