Twelve years ago, on October 25, 2013, Pelikula Ilokana was born. It began as a humble film production group founded by a passionate team of high school students from Paoay, Ilocos Norte, led by Melver Ritz Gomez. What started as a simple dream to tell stories has now grown into a dynamic movement that continues to celebrate and preserve Ilokano culture, language, and tradition through the powerful art of cinema.
For more than a decade, Pelikula Ilokana has served as a platform for storytelling that captures the heart and soul of the Ilokano people. Through short and feature films, the group has become a voice for the region and a testament that Ilokano cinema exists, thrives, and inspires. Even after twelve fruitful years, Pelikula Ilokana remains active and steadfast in its mission. The production continues to create at least two films every year, bringing Ilokano stories to film festivals across the country. Beyond producing films, the group has extended its passion to the community through outreach screenings and partnerships that make cinema more accessible to everyone.
Among its notable community endeavors are the community film screening in Nueva Era, in partnership with the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation - Nueva Era led by Hon. Neljan Earl Gubac, which marked the beginning of Pelikula Ilokanaโs grassroots film outreach. Another memorable event is the Pelikula Ilokana Film Screening at the University Library of Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), in collaboration with the MMSU University Library System, with Mrs. Maria Cristeta Llacuna as Library Director and Ms. Charie Kaye F. Colar as American Corner Coordinator. The screening of an Indigenous Film in Uguis, in partnership with the Mary Mother of the Church Quasi-Parish - MMCQP led by Rev. Fr. Metchell Valdepena, also brought Ilokano storytelling closer to local communities.
In 2023, Pelikula Ilokana achieved another significant milestone with the launch of the Pelikula Ilokana Film Festival, founded by Melver Gomez and co-founded by Mr. Kevin Jude Lasaten. The festival brought together a vibrant community of talented Ilokano filmmakers from Cagayan, Nueva Vizcaya, Isabela, Ilocos Norte, La Union, Baguio, and Pangasinan, all united by a shared passion for storytelling and cultural preservation. It became a true celebration of unity, creativity, and Ilokano pride, and stands as living proof that Ilokano cinema continues to grow, flourish, and inspire new generations of storytellers.
