🩺 High Blood Pressure: The Silent Killer

High blood pressure (hypertension) often has no warning signs, but it can quietly damage your heart, brain, kidneys, and blood vessels. If left untreated, it increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and kidney disease.

The good news is that it can often be prevented. Eat a balanced diet, reduce salt, stay physically active, maintain a healthy weight, avoid smoking, limit alcohol, manage stress, get enough sleep, and check your blood pressure regularly.

Know your numbers. Take care of your heart. A simple blood pressure check today could help prevent a life-threatening emergency tomorrow.

𝗙𝗥𝗨𝗜𝗧 𝗜𝗡 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗜𝗡🌾

Rice is commonly called a seed because it can be planted and grow into a new rice plant. Botanically, however, an intact rice grain is classified as a fruit.

Rice produces a type of dry, one-seeded fruit called a caryopsis. This is the same kind of fruit found in other grasses, including wheat and corn.

Unlike familiar fruits such as mangoes or tomatoes, a caryopsis is not fleshy or juicy. Its thin fruit wall is tightly fused with the seed coat, making the fruit and seed appear to be a single grain.

The palay harvested from the rice plant also has an outer husk formed from parts of the flower. This husk protects the caryopsis but is not part of the fruit itself.

Removing the husk produces brown rice, which still contains the bran, germ, and starchy endosperm. Further milling removes most of the bran and germ, leaving the white rice commonly cooked in Filipino households.

For this reason, polished white rice is no longer the complete fruit. It is mainly the starch-rich inner portion of the original grain after its outer layers have been removed.

Calling rice a seed is understandable in everyday language. Scientifically, however, the intact grain is a specialised fruit that contains a single seed.

🩺 Know Your Blood Pressure, Protect Your Heart

High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is often called the "silent killer" because it may not cause noticeable symptoms while quietly increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and other serious health problems.

Checking your blood pressure regularly is a simple habit that can help detect problems early. For the most accurate reading, rest for at least 5 minutes, sit with your back supported and feet flat on the floor, keep your arm at heart level, and avoid talking during the measurement. If possible, take two readings one minute apart and record the results.

A normal blood pressure for most adults is below 120/80 mmHg. If your readings are consistently higher than normal, consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and advice. If your blood pressure reaches 180/120 mmHg or higher, especially with symptoms such as chest pain, severe headache, shortness of breath, weakness, confusion, or vision changes, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Small daily choices—eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, limiting salt, avoiding smoking, managing stress, and getting enough sleep—can make a big difference in maintaining a healthy blood pressure and protecting your heart.

This post is for public health awareness only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice. If you have concerns about your blood pressure, consult a qualified healthcare provider.

Japan Earthquake Update: Safety Reminder for Filipinos in Japan

July 28, 2026

A strong magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Japan's southern island of Kyushu on Tuesday afternoon, causing significant damage to buildings, roads, bridges, transportation, and power infrastructure. Emergency response teams were immediately deployed as authorities began rescue and damage assessment operations.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) initially issued a tsunami advisory for nearby coastal areas following the earthquake. However, after further monitoring, the advisory was lifted, and authorities confirmed that no major tsunami occurred.

Reports indicate that several people were injured, transportation services were disrupted, and some buildings suffered structural damage. Authorities also warned that strong aftershocks may continue over the coming days, urging residents to remain alert and follow official instructions.

Safety Reminder for Kababayans in Japan

If you are currently in Japan, especially in Kyushu and nearby areas, please:

Stay calm and monitor official announcements.
Be prepared for possible aftershocks.
Stay away from damaged buildings until they are declared safe.
Follow evacuation instructions if local authorities issue them.
Keep your mobile phone charged and prepare emergency supplies such as drinking water, food, medicines, flashlights, and important documents.
Inform your family and loved ones that you are safe whenever possible.

Japan is one of the world's most earthquake-prepared countries, and emergency agencies continue to monitor the situation closely.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by today's earthquake. We encourage all Filipinos in Japan to prioritize their safety, remain vigilant, and rely only on updates from official authorities.

What Is Electricity System Loss? Here's Why It Matters

One of the topics highlighted during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) was the System Loss Charge found on electricity bills. The President asked Congress to amend the law so that this charge would no longer be passed on to consumers. Any change, however, will require legislation before it can take effect.

But what exactly is electricity system loss?

Electricity system loss is the difference between the electricity entering a distribution network and the electricity that is ultimately delivered and billed to customers. It generally falls into two categories. Technical losses occur naturally as electricity travels through power lines, transformers, and other equipment. These losses cannot be completely eliminated because every power system experiences some energy loss. Non-technical losses result from electricity theft, illegal connections, faulty or tampered meters, billing errors, and other avoidable factors.

In the Philippines, the Energy Regulatory Commission allows distribution utilities to recover a regulated portion of system losses through the System Loss Charge, as provided under existing laws. This is the policy that President Marcos has proposed to change. Any amendment will be decided through the legislative process.

Understanding how electricity reaches our homes helps us better understand our monthly bills and the policies that affect them. Regardless of future changes in the law, reducing system losses through improved infrastructure, modern technology, and preventing electricity theft remains an important goal for a more reliable and efficient power system.
