Your dog isn’t just doing cute things. Scientists think he’s trying to talk to you.

Three things your dog does that scientists have actually tested.

Contagious yawning: In a study of 25 dogs, they yawned more after their owner yawned than after a stranger did. The authors link it to empathy, though the exact mechanism isn’t settled.

The puppy eyes look: In a study of 24 dogs, they made more facial expressions when a person faced them than when the person turned away, and the raised inner brow was the most common one. Researchers say it may be an attempt to communicate, not just a display of emotion.

The head tilt: In one study, 7 gifted Border Collies tilted their heads in 43% of trials when asked to fetch a toy by name. 33 typical dogs did it in 2%. Researchers think tilts show up when a word is meaningful to the dog. It’s a small study, so don’t read your own dog’s tilts as a test.

Dogs only have 2 types of color receptors, we have 3. So there's no true red, green, or orange in their world. Just blue, yellow, and shades of gray.

That bright red bone you bought? To your dog, it's a dull brownish blob in green grass. That orange ball? Perfect camouflage.

It's not that they're bad at fetch. It's that we bought the toy in OUR favorite color, not theirs.

This is why good dog toys come in blue and yellow. They actually POP for them.

Quick check: go look at your dog's toy basket. How many are red or orange?

There’s a reason we push early socialization and foundational training with puppies the habits they build now shape the dog they become. A well-trained adult dog almost always starts with intentional puppy work.

Pekingese trivia: These little lions weren’t just palace pets in Imperial China, Pekingese were so revered that stealing one was punishable by death, and the smallest ones (“sleeve dogs”) were literally carried inside the sleeves of royal robes.

Bigger dogs age faster at the cellular level. More heart, more joint, more load, less time to carry it. Smaller dogs grow slower, age slower, wear down slower. That's the whole list in one sentence.

Genetics sets the range. It doesn't decide where your dog lands in it. That part is on you: weight management for a Labrador. Cardiac screening for a Boxer. Joint support started young for a Great Dane. Enough mental work that a long-lived terrier doesn't spend its bonus years bored out of its mind.
