TOPNOTCHER'S BAR PREPARATION
By: Cristobal Rimando

The Bar examination remains to be the toughest licensure exam in the country, evidenced by the low percentage of passing rate based on the records of the Supreme Court. This may be attributed, among others, to the lack of preperations on the part of the bar examinees.

In order to at least ease this challenge, Jurat Ceotus Law Students Organization, whose members are students of Philippine Law School, took the initative of conducting a FREE lecture on how to best answer the bar exam questions and how to hurdle the sickening pre-bar review.

In coordination with the office of the Dean Jose Grapilon and PLS student's council, Jurat Ceotus Law Students Organization invited Dean Vic Ceballos, a top-calibre lecturer, author of QQRs, former Dean of Philippine Christian University College of Law, and Ateneo College of Law Graduate, to lead the lecture.

Dean Vic Ceballos, in his 31 years as a professor of law, studied the norms of the bar examination and was able to pin point the root cause as to why many examinees flunk the bar. He came up with a perfect recipe to pass the bar exam with flying colors which has been proven successful in numerous years. In substance, he said that this was due to the fact that most law schools are not bar-oriented. Bar examinees should be trained on how to answer the questions in less words but hit on-target. In his own words, "a bar examinee should be a sharp shorter."

It was a fun and exciting day in PLS as the attendees went home with newly learned skills and with high spirits. The attendees never thought that studying law could be fun, too, if one has the right mindset. Surely, these new learned ideas will bring confidence in order to win against the challenges and to get that "ATTY." before a PLS students' name.

The whole student body is sending their deepest gratitude to Dean Vic Ceballos for imparting his knowledge to us. He is a heaven-sent for the students having the goal of bringing back the glory of our beloved law school in producing topnotch lawyers.

LEXION SERIES: An Open Forum and Film Discussion on Human Rights
By: Blesi Laxamana

On the 2nd day of the National Law Week 2019, Philippine Law School (PLS), with its Law Student Government (LSG) in partnership with Alpha Phi Omega and Jurat Coetus, facilitated a film showing which featured the film “E-Team.” The film is a documentary about the atrocities in Syria and Libya, highlighting the importance of human rights.

The film showing was followed by a very informative talk/lecture from Atty. Florian Kim Dayag, who is a Human Rights Law professor in PLS. He explained the structure of International Law in relation to Human Rights specifically in Syria. The lecture proceeded, in chronological order, with the (1) Rome Statute and Geneva Convention; (2) the current situation in Syria; (3) avenues available for the international community; (4) problems thereto; and (5) comparison to the Philippine setting. Highlights from the lecture are the discussion on Ad Hoc Tribunals in resolving conflicts in relation to Humanitarian Law, the problem thereto of how to operate and how to maintain impartiality of the judges, and the principle of compatibility and admissibility. The bottom line is, there are different actions a country can do to resolve issues, but so many factors can affect its effectivity or applicability, especially when a State is not a party to the Convention.

Finally, the lecture left a question for us to ponder which has been a problem in the international community: How do you enforce the decisions of the International Criminal Court (ICC), when enforceability cannot be compelled to the State party, for example the Philippines?

The event ended with the awarding of token and certificate of appreciation to Atty. Dayag, and the giving away of mugs and folders by the LSG to the students for participating in the event.

DEAN GRAPILON ATTENDS THE LAUNCHING OF LEB’S 2019 LAW FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Dean Jose Grapilon represented Philippine Law School on the launching of the Legal Education Board’s (LEB) 2019 Law Faculty Development Program and 2nd Law Professors Hall of Fame Award at the San Beda University on September 19, 2019.

One of the most important features of the 2019 Faculty Development Program is that it will support qualified law deans and professors to earn Master of Laws degrees at no cost, while the 2nd Law Professors Hall of Fame Award will serve as a platform to recognize those law professors who have given noteworthy contributions to the mastery of the law in the country.

The launch of these two new LEB initiatives was led by Chairman Emerson B. Aquende and Commissioner Abelardo T. Domondon.
Indeed the consistent engagement of Philippine Law Schoo l in every LEB’s initiatives will considerably improve the overall academic performance of its faculty and law students.

SEMINAR ON PUBLIC SPEAKING FOR PLS STUDENTS

Halfway through the National Law Week on Wednesday, 18th September 2019, Philippine Law School through Alpha Phi Omega Xi Xi in partnership with our Law Student Government conducted a forum tackling one of the most important skills that each of us – as law students and future practitioners – must possess and master: Public Speaking.

The said seminar was led by Atty. David Aquino, one of the most respected faculty members of our law school. In his talk, he emphasized the importance of being proficient in the art of public speaking both in law school and in actual legal practice when we become members of the bar. Certainly, we cannot deny the significance of public speaking with the way it will determine our success in the profession that we intend to get into.

Atty. Aquino also gave suggestions on how to become a more credible speaker by mastering the basic principles of argumentation and by being familiar with the common mistakes committed by lawyers during public speaking. He also shared a number of techniques that personally works for him.

But what was most noteworthy during Atty. Aquino’s talk was his expression of faith to all of us that – with practice and discipline – we can become the most articulate lawyers in the future. It is always encouraging to hear from a lawyer like Atty. Aquino who is already successful in his law career, expresses his unwavering belief that we have the power to make our dreams a reality too.

Without a doubt, this combined initiative of Alpha Phi Omega Xi Xi and our Law Student Government renewed the spirits of Philippine Law School students to strive harder and overcome our law school struggles one semester at a time.
