In our society, there are two types of peopleโ€”the ones who support others to rise, and the ones who drag others down. Sadly, even inside our homes, support is not always present. Instead of being happy for someoneโ€™s success, some choose to give harsh remarks and focus only on weaknesses.

This is what we call It is the behavior of pulling others down out of envy or selfishness. Imagine a bucket filled with crabs, then one crab climbs to the edge, almost free, but instead of helping, the other crabs pull it back. No one escapesโ€”not because they cannotโ€”but because they refuse to let one succeed. The same thing happens in our families and society, where instead of lifting others up, people drag them down.

We hear this in common lines: โ€ These words, often spoken lightly, can leave deep scars. They discourage instead of inspire, and when repeated, they make people doubt their own worth. Home should be a place of comfort, but with a crab mentality, it can feel like a cage that limits growth.

Sometimes, this mentality also hides in common Filipino practices. For example, ๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฃ can be good when it shows gratitude, but it turns harmful when used to control someoneโ€™s choices or remind them that they will always โ€œoweโ€ their success to others. Another is the โ€œ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ฃ๐˜บ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฌโ€ ๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ต, where children are seen as investments who must โ€œpay backโ€ their parents. Instead of having their own lives to manage, added burdens are felt as they feel pressured and guilty of needing to constantly provide money for their parents in exchange for the years spent to take care of them, even if it was their responsibility. Thereโ€™s also ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜บโ€”it may start off as jokes and comments with lines such as โ€œno offenseโ€ but proceeds to give insults that may lead to belittling oneโ€™s life and even their achievements; sandwich method is also often used to provide subtle disrespectful acts to a person through giving backhanded complimentsโ€”where one gives a compliment or praise, then added with a subtle insult, and finishing with another compliment. All of these show how crab mentality can be part of our daily lives.

This is the painful reality of many Filipinosโ€”family competitions, constant comparisons, guilt-tripping, and unchecked enviousness can destroy harmony. If this cycle continues, individuals may lose the chance to reach their full potential, and families fail to become a source of strength.

But still, there is hope. If crab mentality can begin at home, then its opposite, which are ๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ต, ๐˜ข๐˜ง๐˜ง๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ, ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜บ, can also start there. Imagine if every achievement was met with applause instead of criticism, and every step forward was welcomed with encouragement instead of envy. Families would not only nurture success but also raise Filipinos who know how to lift others up.

The challenge is to We must unlearn comparison, replace envy with gratitude, and remember that one personโ€™s success does not take away from our own. Only then can we escape the โ€œbucketโ€ togetherโ€”not by dragging each other down, but by rising side by side. And when we escape, we can truly embrace the spirit of ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ, which emphasizes helping, celebrating, and carrying one another toward progress. This is how families, communities, and the nation can move forward together.

In this generation that we live in, thereโ€™s still a big chance to get rid of this toxic culture. As future parents, friends, family members, or even a normal person in other people's lives, we have the power to change societal norms. Within ourselves, we can start this change. Spread positivity instead of negativity, love instead of hate, and appreciation instead of envy. With the small actions that we take, it would continuously grow into something great that the world has to offer.

Wherever they may be, whatever level they may teach, the National Teachersโ€™ Day is for every professional teacher out there working tirelessly for the betterment of society, one student at a time.

Building the youth is a momentous and often thankless task that teachers strive toward as a collective, working hand-in-hand with the government, communities, and families alike in shaping a better future for future leaders of society. This day commemorates their large contributions and undying commitment to creating life-long learners. May their fires burn ever bright, and may the nation kindle their will continuously.

Happy National Teachersโ€™ Day!

The City University of Pasay (CUP) participated in the 2025 SM By the Bay International Coastal Clean-Up Drive at Central Park, on September 20, 2025.

Volunteers were supplied with cleaning materials such as gloves, facemasks, and sacks they could use for the cleanup. Large amounts of trash, including plastics, wood, and fabrics, were gathered and disposed into designated trash bags. The waste collected was then transported to the weighing station where volunteers could tally the pieces of trash they had gathered.

This annual activity, regularly joined by the university, seeks to protect and foster a culture of environmental care. Beyond the cleanup, the event also highlighted the urgent need for responsible waste management and sustainable practices to reduce pollution at its source. The initiative serves as a reminder that proper disposal, recycling, and mindful consumption are vital steps toward achieving cleaner seas and a healthier environment for future generations.
