ICC WON’T BE SWAYED BY POLITICS
Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro clarified that the International Criminal Court bases its rulings on the Rome Statute, not political statements — a response to former President Rodrigo Duterte’s camp invoking President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s remarks to question the ICC’s jurisdiction.
Castro, speaking at the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Malaysia, said the ICC’s evaluation “will not be guided by political statements.”
The ICC recently upheld jurisdiction over Duterte’s war on drugs case, rejecting his defense team’s argument that the court lost authority after the Philippines’ 2019 withdrawal from the Rome Statute. | Carl Magadia, layout by Chynna Basillaje

HURRICANE MELISSA EXPLODES INTO CATEGORY 4 MONSTER — JAMAICA BRACES FOR DIRECT HIT
Hurricane Melissa has rapidly intensified into a Category 4 storm with 145 mph winds, and forecasters warn it could reach a rare Category 5 before making landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday morning.
Authorities are urging residents to “seek shelter now” as catastrophic winds, flooding, and landslides threaten the island. Prime Minister Andrew Holness has placed hospitals on emergency mode, activated shelters, and ordered airport closures as Melissa inches slowly — and dangerously — toward the coast.
Experts warn Jamaica could face its strongest hurricane on record, with up to 40 inches of rain, 13-foot storm surges, and widespread destruction expected. | Photo courtesy of AFP

TWO SUSPECTS NABBED IN $102-MILLION LOUVRE HEIST
French authorities have arrested two men allegedly behind the audacious Louvre robbery that shocked the world — a daylight theft of crown jewels worth $102 million.
One suspect was caught at Charles de Gaulle Airport while attempting to flee to Algeria, while the second was arrested shortly after in the Paris region. Investigators say both are in their 30s and known for theft.
The 19 October heist saw robbers use a stolen movers’ truck and blowtorches to break into a gallery, escaping on scooters with royal gems — including an emerald-and-diamond necklace once gifted by Napoleon Bonaparte to Empress Marie-Louise.
Authorities fear the jewels may have been broken apart or melted down, but remain confident that “thieves are always eventually caught.” | AFP
