Segregation (separating crayfish by size, age, or condition) is very important in crayfish farming because it directly affects survival, growth, and profit.
1. Prevents Cannibalism
Crayfish are naturally aggressive, especially during molting (when they shed their shell and become soft). Larger crayfish can easily eat smaller or weaker ones if kept together. Segregation reduces this risk.
2. Improves Survival Rate
By separating juveniles, breeders, and market-size crayfish, you protect vulnerable groups. This leads to more crayfish surviving until harvest.
3. Promotes Faster Growth
When crayfish are grouped by similar size, they don’t compete unfairly for food. Smaller crayfish get enough nutrients, allowing them to grow faster and more evenly.
