: Finding Chika by Mitch Albom 👨‍👩‍👧

"I am a child of God." ~ Chika

I decided to wrap up my with this profoundly moving and heart-wrenching memoir about a remarkable Haitian girl named Chika.

Medjerda "Chika" Jeune, a spirited and courageous young girl, was born just three days before the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti. At the age of three, after her mother passed away, she was sent to the Have Faith Haiti Orphanage, organized by Mitch and his wife, Janine. When she was five, Chika was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive brain tumor called DIPG (diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma), and her once happy life at the orphanage began to change in ways no one could have expected. 💔

This was a tough and emotional read for me—probably one of the hardest books to process. 😭 I found myself crying through much of it, overwhelmed by the emotional weight of Chika's journey. I was deeply awed by her incredible resilience, love, and faith in the face of her unimaginable hardship. Her story is a poignant reminder that even the shortest lives can leave an indelible mark on our hearts and that we must cherish the fleeting moments we share with those we love.

To Chika, I’m so grateful to have met you, and I will never forget you. You are a truly wonderful soul. 😭🙏

: Stitches (Kai, Sasu) by Hirokatsu Kihara 🪡

Decided to read this collection of nine bizarre tales (plus a bonus horror manga) for my . 🎃

This latest collaboration between Hirokatsu Kihara and Junji Ito brought together a range of strange stories — from a young ghost haunting a school library to a ghostly puppeteer to a mysterious girl joining a training camp, and more.

Ito-san's masterful illustrations added an eerie atmosphere to Kihara-san's storytelling. Unfortunately, most of the stories didn't pack the punch I was hoping for. Despite their spooky premises, the scares were minimal and the plot points lacked depth. The pacing didn't allow for enough build-up to make them genuinely frightening for me. 🫠

Two standouts for me, however, due to their creepy visuals, were 'Face' 🌚, which featured a woman whose body was possessed by a sinister face tumor, and 'Snow Day' ❄️, where a high school student encountered a mysterious barefooted girl in a flimsy dress walking around, unbothered by the winter cold.

Overall, the art felt like the main highlight while the stories themselves fell short. This book might appeal to dedicated Ito fans or those only looking for a lighter horror read.

Dame Maggie Smith was a shining force as Professor McGonagall in all eight Harry Potter films. We are so saddened to hear of her passing today, aged 89. Her quick wit and formidable presence as the Head of Gryffindor house made sure Hogwarts was always in safe hands.
