โUnder Proclamation No. 302, August 8-14 is designated as Philippine Space Week to commemorate and promote Filipino scientific contributions to astronomy.

โDuring August 10-13, the planetarium and telescope viewing site at the DOST-PAGASA in Quezon City will be opened to the public for free.

โLong ago, even before Europeans discovered Philippine shores, Filipino ancestors were watching the skies. They used constellations as tools to help them with farming and other tasks. Take a look at the constellations the Filipinos identified with, and see for yourself how they helped us in the past.

โOrion's Belt is Balatik, the wild pig trap; it told the farmers when to clear their land, till the soil, and sow their seeds. The seven stars of Pleiades are known as Moroporo, the rice field. When Moroporo rises, the farmers know that it is time to prepare their rice fields.

โThe Southern Cross is called Lubi by the Visayans, a native Filipino term for the coconut tree, which guided the ancient mariners through our archipelago.

โThe Big Dipper is referred to by Tagalogs as Bubu, the fish trap and it was used as a guide by coastal fishermen as to when they should harvest the sea. Scorpius is called Salokah, the ladle. It was used to signal the start of the harvest season.

โLike other civilizations, our ancestors were also able to identify and integrate astronomy in their daily lives, and it is crucial to know the brilliant people that studied them to show the connection between culture and astronomy!

โDr. Dante Ambrosio, known as the "Father of Philippine Ethnoastronomy", has dedicated his life to researching and preserving indigenous knowledge of the skies for future generations. Meanwhile, the late Fr. Victor Badillo, SJ, has pioneered astronomy education in the Philippines, and an asteroid is even named in his honor (4866 Badillo).

โDr. Rogel Mari Sese, lead author of the Philippine Space Act, is now spearheading our country's space program and inspiring our young scientists, and astrophysicist Dr. Reinabelle Reyes and astrophotographer Christopher Go represents the Philippines in the global astronomy scene.
