🔎 Causes of Ear Infections
Ear infections usually happen when bacteria, viruses, or fungi infect the middle ear, outer ear, or inner ear.
✅ 1. Outer Ear Infection (Otitis Externa / “Swimmer’s Ear”)
Causes:
Water trapped in the ear canal → moist environment for bacteria/fungi.
Skin irritation (cotton buds, hearing aids, earphones).
Allergic reactions (earrings, hair products).
Skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis).
✅ 2. Middle Ear Infection (Otitis Media)
Causes:
Blocked Eustachian tube (connects ear to throat) → fluid buildup.
Cold, flu, sinusitis, or allergies.
Enlarged adenoids (common in kids).
Bacterial or viral infections (Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae).
✅ 3. Inner Ear Infection (Labyrinthitis)
Causes:
Viral infections (influenza, measles, herpes viruses).
Bacterial spread from middle ear infections or meningitis.
Autoimmune reaction.
📌 Risk Factors: smoking, weak immune system, frequent colds, bottle-feeding infants lying down, poor ear hygiene.
✅ 🛠️ Myringotomy Procedure (Ear Tube Surgery)
Myringotomy is a minor surgical procedure done to relieve pressure or drain fluid from the middle ear.
Indications (Why it’s done):
Recurrent ear infections (otitis media).
Chronic fluid buildup (otitis media with effusion).
Hearing loss due to middle ear fluid.
Severe ear pain from pressure changes.
Step-by-Step Procedure:
1. Preparation
Patient usually under general anesthesia (especially children).
Ear is cleaned and sterilized.
2. Incision
Surgeon makes a tiny cut in the eardrum (tympanic membrane) using a surgical microscope.
3. Drainage
Fluid (pus, mucus, or serous fluid) from the middle ear is suctioned out.
4. Tube Insertion (Tympanostomy Tube / Grommet)
A small ventilation tube may be placed in the incision to keep it open.
This prevents fluid from re-accumulating and helps equalize ear pressure.
5. Recovery
Usually outpatient (patient goes home the same day).
Tubes may fall out on their own in 6–12 months.
Eardrum usually heals naturally after the tube falls out.
✅ Benefits:
Relieves ear pain & pressure.
Improves hearing.
Reduces recurrent infections.
⚠️ Possible Risks:
Minor bleeding.
Infection at the incision site.
Scarring of eardrum.
Persistent hole in eardrum (rare).
