How do published papers impact scientific knowledge? How is impact and performance measured in academic publishing?

The JAFES session at the 2025 PCEDM Annual Convention entitled, "Measuring Impact: Understanding Journal Metrics and Citation Trends," explored the impact of published papers on scientific knowledge and methods for measuring impact and performance in academic publishing. The session featured Dr. Gabriel Jasul Jr., who discussed journal metrics and citation trends, and Dr. Cecilia Jimeno, who presented an overview of the most cited papers from JAFES. Moderated by Dr. Elizabeth Paz-Pacheco, this session aimed to provide valuable insights into understanding the influence and assessment of scholarly publications.

Philippine study on pheochromocytoma: median age 37.5 yrs; 90% with hypertension; 2/3 with classic symptoms, 1/3 incidentalomas; 17% recurrence, found in younger patients with bilateral disease.

Pheochromocytoma is a benign adrenal tumor linked to hypertension and spells. A Philippine study shows normal BP doesn’t rule it out, as some cases are found incidentally during abdominal imaging for other concerns.

Among patients with pheochromocytoma, higher metanephrines levels are associated with perioperative complications and higher malignancy risk. Early recognition and regular follow-up post-operatively is essential.
