Every time I see a ramp, a checklist runs through my mind:

✅ Can I use it safely?
✅ Can I use it on my own?
✅ Is it stable?
✅ Will it still work rain or shine?
✅ Is the path clear on the other side?

These are the ramps that let me move through life with dignity and confidence

They exist.
And we need more of them.

Video Description

Kat Out of the Box navigating several ramps that are fully accessible — gentle slope, stable surface, and clear on both sides. No barriers. No second-guessing. Just moving.

ASEAN Para Games silver medalist Katrina Hernandez exposed how inaccessible a wheelchair ramp can be.

In a new viral TikTok video, she seemingly appears hopeful as she approaches a ramp beside a stoop: “Buti na lang, may railings din. Pero accessible ba talaga ito?"

“I’ll let you be the judge of that,” she added, before the video showed her struggling to navigate the ramp despite multiple efforts.

The clip quickly underscores how accessibility features may exist on paper, but don't always work in practice.

While such installations can make establishments appear compliant with the Accessibility Law and the expanded Magna Carta for Disabled Persons, poorly designed ramps and facilities can end up unsafe—and ultimately exclusionary.

Hernandez won silver in the women’s 86 kg para powerlifting finals at the 13th ASEAN Para Games last January.

Beyond sports, she's also a medical doctor who graduated from the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health. According to a university profile, she has lived with a disability since childhood—initially using braces through med school before transitioning to using a wheelchair five years ago.

The video shows that if a para-athlete like Hernandez struggles this much, then the ordinary PWDs are likely struggling more.

Napanuod ko ang video ni Doc Kat, at nakakalungkot dahil ito na naman ang paalala na hanggang ngayon, marami pa ring establisyimento ang hindi seryosong ipinatutupad ang accessibility.

Accessibility is not a luxury. Accessibility is not a favor. Accessibility is a RIGHT.

Abangan ang review sa video ni Doc Kat na nakatuon sa accountability at awareness, hindi sa paninira.

Here’s what you asked for!

You’d think going down would be the easy part. But this is where skill comes in. One wrong move…and everything changes.

Here’s the thing: for most people, it’s just an errand. You go in, do your thing, you get out. No brainer.

But for those of us who depend on these kind of ramps, access comes with a price, the price of safety.

A ramp isn’t just architecture. It’s a decision someone made about whether or not we matter.

So I’ll ask you again,is this really accessible?

VIDEO DESCRIPTION
Kat Out of the Box is at the top of a steep ramp in her wheelchair, with railings on the right side. Because the incline is too steep to descend safely facing forward, she turns and goes down the ramp backward. She grips the railings tightly and uses her hands to control her speed. Her body leans forward as she concentrates on maintaining her balance and stability. Descending the ramp requires significant effort, strength, and caution. When she finally reaches the bottom, she looks relieved but visibly tired from the challenge.

Basta may ramp, accessible na ba? 🤔

Sometimes the ramp is there, the railings are there, but using them is a completely different story.

What does accessibility mean for you? Let me know in the comments. 👇

VIDEO DESCRIPTION
Kat Out of the Box goes up a steep ramp in a wheelchair with railings on the right side. She makes a running start for the ramp. But because the incline is too steep, she needs to pull herself up with all her strength and energy using the railings. At the end, she is able to get up, but she is very tired

DISCLAIMER: I still struggle with this everyday!

It’s hard to keep a level head when you’re staring at a barrier that shouldn’t be there. The frustration is real and the anger makes sense.

But I keep reminding myself: most people aren’t exposed to disability and sometimes have no idea what we go through. They don’t see it because they’ve never had to.
That’s not evil.
That’s just a gap and gaps can be filled.

So when I feel the anger rising,
I TRY MY BEST to come back to this:
They don’t know yet. They just don’t understand. And I can help change that.

Shame closes people. Grace opens them. And an open person is one conversation away from becoming an ally ❤️

Nobody sees this part, the slow work.

Big thank you to , , , and for being such a big part of my para powerlifting career. You’ve helped me stay strong, move better, and recover smarter through every stage of this journey. ❤️

You guys are with me in every lift, always. 💪

I almost missed out on my own life because I thought there was only one way to live it.

There were many things I wanted to try but talked myself out of. I even almost missed out on para sports and para powerlifting, because I was too afraid of what it would look like to do it my way.

I wasn’t holding back because I couldn’t. I was holding back because the Kat-way didn’t look like everyone else’s way. And to me, that gap felt like failure.

So I wouldn’t even try.

Good thing I was wrong.

Because here’s what nobody tells you:
Forward doesn’t have a required form.
It doesn’t have a required speed.
It doesn’t have a required body.
It just has a direction.

Whatever that looks like for you? That counts. That’s enough. It’s YOUR way.

Stop waiting until you can do it like everyone else. You might just miss the whole thing.

When do you think the Philippines will finally catch up with accessibility and inclusion?

Yes I have a disability, but it’s actually not my biggest problem

The start of the reel flashes: Most people misunderstand what the real issue is

The reel then shows 5 scenarios. The reel is in a split screen format and the scenarios will play in sync side by side. The upper part shows what people see about my disability and the bottom half shows what I see.

Scenario 1 - Kat tries to go up a steep ramp
What Others See: SHE CAN’T GET IN
COZ SHE’S IN A WHEELCHAIR
What I See: I CAN’T GET IN
COZ THE RAMP IS UNUSABLE

Scenario 2 - Kat wheeling through a pedestrian with other people but at the end there is no ramp
What Others See: SHE IS STRUGGLING
TO GET AROUND
What I See: THE CITY WAS NOT DESIGNED
WITH ACCESSIBILITY IN MIND

Scenario 3 - Kat goes up a steep ramp with the help of a security guard
What Others See: SHE NEEDS HELP
TO GET AROUND
What I See: THE RAMP IS UNSAFE
TO USE ON MY OWN

Scenario 4 - Kat doing her groceries on her own
What Others See: LIFE MUST BE SO HARD
BECAUSE SHE NEEDS A WHEELCHAIR
What I See: LACK OF ACCESSIBILITY IS THE PROBLEM
NOT THE WEELCHAIR

Scenario 5 - Kat wheeling through a fountain then ending with a swift glide
What Others See: IT MUST BE SO SAD
TO LIVE WITH A DISABILITY
What I See: I ONLY HAVE ONE LIFE TO LIVE
AND I CHOOSE TO THRIVE
WITH MY DISABILITY

Closing of the reel shows:
The way we see disability affects the way we build the world
Understanding creates accessibility
