โ€ผ๏ธWEEKEND WORD
Deserve

๐Ÿ“– 4 When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, โ€œThis man deserves to have you do this, 5 because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue." ~ Luke 7:4-5,9 (NIV)

We live in a time when many feel they deserve thingsโ€”this mindset is often referred to as entitlement. Some believe they deserve better because they grew up poor or suffered mistreatment. Others think their wealth, work ethic, punctuality, talent, or even appearance makes them more worthy than others. The world is full of rationalizations to justify why someone is "deserving."

In todayโ€™s passage, a Roman centurion sends Jewish elders to ask Jesus to come and heal his servant. The elders insist he deserves this favorโ€”after all, heโ€™s generous and has helped build the synagogue. But when Jesus nears the house, the centurion sends word:

โ€œLord, donโ€™t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof.โ€ (v. 6)

Unlike those around him, the centurion doesnโ€™t rely on status, good deeds, or public approval. He humbly recognizes his unworthiness and places his trust fully in Jesusโ€™ authority.

Entitlement can creep into our hearts too. โ€œIโ€™ve been here longer.โ€ โ€œIโ€™ve worked harder.โ€ โ€œI deserve this.โ€ These are dangerous attitudes. Jesus isnโ€™t moved by entitlementโ€”Heโ€™s moved by faith.

โ€œI tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.โ€ (v. 9)

As we serve this week, letโ€™s guard our hearts against entitlement. Instead, may we live and lead in a way that moves the heart of Jesusโ€”not through what we think we deserve, but through humble faith and trust in Him. - Keith Garner

You donโ€™t have to be a pastor to be used by God.
He uses willing heartsโ€”givers, creatives, students, business leaders, everyday peopleโ€”to move His Kingdom forward.

Your "yes" to missions, your generosity, your prayersโ€”they all echo in eternity.
Never underestimate how God can use you to reach the world.
