The Historical Origin of Laing

The Filipino dish Laing is a traditional food that originated in the Bicol Region of the Philippines.

Original Name: In Bicol, the dish is known as Pinangat.

Time Period: While there is no specific starting date recorded, the dish has been a staple in Bicolano cooking for centuries, as it utilizes two ingredients abundant in the region: gabi (taro) leaves and coconut milk (gata).

The Difference: The original pinangat often uses a whole taro leaf as a wrapper, while the version known as laing (especially outside Bicol) typically uses shredded, dried taro leaves.
