READ: MAYOR RAISA TREÑAS INSISTS DPWH FAILED TO COORDINATE WITH CITY HALL ON WATERWAY PROJECTS

Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas has responded to the clarification issued by the Department of Public Works and Highways–Iloilo City District Engineering Office (DPWH-ICDEO) regarding several infrastructure projects along several waterways in the city.

The mayor maintained that the DPWH-ICDEO failed to properly coordinate with the Iloilo City Government prior to implementing the projects, as required by law.

“Even during the previous administration, Engr. Roy Pacanan has always equated the mere act of sending progress reports as coordination. Pero kun lantawon mo ang ila kaugalingon nga memorandum order, klaro gid nga ginasiling nga prior to implementation, dapat may coordination anay sa LGU,” the mayor said.

“The truth remains: nga ang projects nga ini were implemented without due coordination, in clear violation of the Local Government Code of the Philippines, and therefore, without following the clear provisions of law,” she emphasized.

Mayor Treñas added that DPWH Secretary Manny Bonoan, Regional Director Joel Limpengco, and Assistant Regional Director Al Fruto have agreed to pause further construction until a study is presented to prove the projects “will not endanger lives or cause damage to properties.”

“Because of the effects of the illegal reclamations on the waterways and creeks of Iloilo City, we cannot turn a blind eye to the consequences these uncoordinated actions have caused, particularly in worsening the flooding in our communities,” she concluded.

LOOK: The House of Representatives has removed the red carpet at the North Wing Lobby entrance ahead of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s 4th State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday. A similar setup was also applied at the South Wing Lobby entrance.

According to a memorandum issued by the House, the move is intended “to avoid ostentatious displays” during the event. The directive was made in solidarity with Filipinos recently affected by a series of severe weather disturbances over the past week.
