Senator Risa Hontiveros on Tuesday blasted the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) for investing over ₱1 billion in an online gambling company, calling the move “a reckless and unethical use of public funds.”

“Tayo nga pong mga empleyado ng gobyerno, bawal tumungtong sa casino pero ang GSIS, todo taya? The pensions of public employees are not for gambling!” Hontiveros said in a privilege speech.

She called the investment a “betrayal of public trust”, and warned it puts at risk the retirement security of millions of government workers.

Hontiveros is urging the Senate to investigate the decision immediately, questioning the process and those responsible for approving the controversial deal.

“The GSIS must be held accountable. We cannot allow a single centavo of public sector pensions to be gambled away,” she added.

The Parish of St. John the Baptist in Jimenez, Misamis Occidental, the oldest church in the province has been temporarily closed for one week starting August 5, following the circulation of a video showing a woman spitting into the holy water font.

In response, the Archbishop and clergy will perform an Act of Deconsecration today at 3:00 PM. No Masses will be held during the closure, including on Sundays. Holy Hour will continue as an alternative prayer activity.

Church leaders clarified that the move is not meant to shame anyone, but to restore reverence for sacred symbols and encourage spiritual reflection. The public is invited to join the ritual.

Claver, a thriving municipality in Surigao del Norte, is a step closer to becoming a city after Congresswoman Bernadette S. Barbers filed House Bill No. 00068, proposing its conversion into the City of Claver.

Barbers said cityhood will boost local development, improve public services, and provide greater funding. Known for its mining and economic activity, Claver is seen as ready for the transition.

If approved by Congress and ratified through a plebiscite, Claver would become Surigao del Norte’s first component city outside Surigao City

IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay — A bill has been filed in Congress to convert the Municipality of Ipil into a component city.

House Bill No. 00173, authored by Congresswoman Marlyne “Doc Marly” Hofer-Hasim, seeks to establish the City of Ipil, citing the town’s growth and readiness for cityhood.

“This move will strengthen Ipil’s capacity to serve its people and boost development,” Hofer-Hasim said.

If passed, a plebiscite will be held for residents to approve the conversion. Ipil is currently the capital and commercial hub of Zamboanga Sibugay.

ISULAN, Sultan Kudarat — House Bill No. 00389 has been filed by Congresswoman Ruth M. Sakaluran, seeking to convert the Municipality of Isulan into a component city to be known as the City of Isulan.

The bill highlights Isulan’s growing economy, population, and infrastructure as key qualifications for cityhood. As the provincial capital, Isulan is poised to benefit from increased funding, improved services, and stronger local governance once granted city status.

This measure is not just about status, it is about empowering the local government to better serve its constituents,” Congresswoman Sakaluran said in a statement. “Cityhood will enable Isulan to access more resources, expand public services, and create new opportunities for its people.”

The proposal will undergo congressional deliberation and, if approved, a plebiscite will be held for final ratification.
