The Heartbeat of Humanity: United Nations Week

‎From October 18th to the 24th, we pause to observe United Nations Week, essentially celebrating the world’s enduring promise to work together. This week is a heartfelt nod to the day the UN Charter officially came to life in 1945, lighting a beacon of hope after a devastating war. It's a chance to remember the fundamental human dream of global peace and security for every person on Earth.

‎This special week shines a light on the quiet, yet profound work the UN undertakes every day to uplift humanity. We hear stories of progress in defending our human rights and fighting for a more sustainable future for all of us. These celebrations invite every individual to step forward and recognize their own role in solving massive challenges like poverty and climate change.

‎In the end, United Nations Week reminds us that we are one global family, stronger when we stand side by side. It encourages us to look beyond our borders, celebrate our beautiful differences, and recommit to a shared mission of kindness and cooperation. The week is a simple, powerful message: together, we can truly build a better home for everyone.

Fire and Focus: BFP Trains Comsayanos on First Aid and Safety

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Pili Fire Station conducted the “CSHSB on F.I.R.E. (First Aid, Rescue, and Evacuation)” training on October 15, 2025 afternoon at Camillo Guevara Hall for the students of the Computer Science High School of Bicolandia.

The activity aimed to educate students on essential safety practices such as CPR, first aid response, and proper evacuation during emergencies like fires and earthquakes. BFP officers led demonstrations and guided different student teams in performing life-saving techniques.

Through this collaboration, Comsayanos gained practical knowledge on emergency preparedness and teamwork, reinforcing the school’s commitment to safety and disaster readiness.

Fire Safety Roadshow Ignites Awareness at CSHSB

The Computer Science High School of Bicolandia (CSHSB), in partnership with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), held a F.I.R.E (First Aid, Rescue, and Evacuation) Square Roadshow seminar on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the Camillo Guevarra Hall.

The event took place in the morning, with School Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (SDRRM) Coordinator, Sir Marco Polo T. Panti, leading the discussion on the importance of awareness, preparedness, and responsible action during emergencies caused by different phenomena.

“I think the seminar was important because it helped me become more aware of natural disasters and prepared to take action if an earthquake or any other emergency happens unexpectedly,” said Grade 10 student, Jarozel Jamorol.

The seminar concluded with interactive discussions and demonstrations that aimed to educate students on basic fire concepts and safety practices.

Every day, students rush from one task to another—reporting, projects, quizzes, and more. Sometimes, we don’t even notice how tired we really are until our brains start to slow down.

Today is World Mental Health Day, a time to remind ourselves that taking care of our minds is just as important as caring for our bodies.

Science says that when we’re stressed, our body releases cortisol—a hormone that prepares us to face challenges. But when it stays too long in our system—like when we’re constantly worrying about grades or juggling endless tasks—it drains our energy and focus.

The amygdala, the part of the brain that detects threats, becomes overactive. The prefrontal cortex, the one that helps us think clearly, slows down. And that’s when everything feels heavier than it should.

Our brains also need rest for us to stay healthy. Studies show that short breaks, good sleep, and even simple breathing exercises help reset the brain, allowing us to think, learn, and feel better. It’s not laziness; it’s biology.

So as the world celebrates World Mental Health Day, let’s remember: school can be hard, but our mental health matters, too. Our minds deserve the same care and attention we give to every subject we study.

Generational Trauma

Like parent and child, the people often rebel against the government, only to repeat the abuse their parents have done to them when they build a family.

Imagine the government as an abusive parent and the Filipino people as the child. For decades, this parent has manipulated and gaslighted the household—promising love but only giving pain and disappointment. The child rebels, shouts, and dreams of running away. Yet when that child grows up and starts a family of their own, they often become the very parent they swore they’d never be. This is an allegory for the state of the Filipino people.

In the recent “Trillion Peso March” the harbinger of change might have shown up; a sign that we will finally rid our government of corruption. But this isn’t at all guaranteed. Filipinos have a habit of calling to action but then forgetting—complaining about a corrupt government, and the lack of climate and flood control projects, then voting the same people, and repeat.

This is the generational trauma of our country. For example, the 2013 Million Peso March—a protest against the Pork Barrel Fund; after which, one of the members of this corruption became a very prominent part of our current set of officials. We call for change, do nothing, expect change, get nothing, and repeat.

We rise with passion, patriotism, and a thirst for the blood of the corrupt—yet we ourselves let it rise, let it breed, and when the time calls for it, we will rise again, only to fall the same way—we will then ask why our legs are crippled.

Breaking this cycle demands more than rebellion. When survivors of abuse want to heal, they turn to therapy, education, and a supportive community. The same applies to nations. We need civic education that shows the mistakes of the past, reforms that reduce dynastic power, and a culture that prizes accountability over personality.

Changes start somewhere—playing in a band, smoking, or getting into fights—but we must ask ourselves: “Is this really change?” For the sake of our children and their children, we must learn from what has happened and our mistakes, otherwise, we will be stuck drowning in our own tears.

We are no longer children. We have the tools, the medium, and the democratic rights our parents fought for. The question is whether we will continue reenacting their mistakes—or finally grow into a society mature enough to parent the next generation.
