My response to foreigners mocking Filipinos for practicing English at home.

I don’t think you’re aware that many Filipinos work all over the world - from North America to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. English proficiency is a huge advantage for us globally, and one of the reasons many companies prefer Filipinos is because of our ability to communicate well in English. So if parents want their kids to practice English at home, it’s often because they want them to be competitive in a world where English is the primary language of business. Helping kids be fluent in English isn’t about shame - it’s about giving them the tools to thrive anywhere.

It doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t respect or value their own language. Every Filipino is required to study the national language in school, from elementary to college. Local dialects are also widely spoken, so they don’t just disappear because English is used at home.

Being proud of our roots and mastering a global language aren’t mutually exclusive. In fact, many Filipinos carry both. We can be fluent in English and still have deep pride in our heritage, culture, and mother tongue - even after decades of living abroad. That’s not losing identity; that’s expanding it 🇵🇭

‎Their healthcare system is truly extraordinary. They not only have five-star facilities, but also provide free healthcare for their citizens. And if patients, such as the elderly, are unable to go to the hospital, doctors (and dentists too) go to their homes - free of charge.
