We will converge to commune so we can connect.

For a year, Alitaptap Bookshop had advocated for access to books and promotion of local literature and local art.

For a year, we did multiple activities that support this advocacy. In collaborations with different organizations, we did poetry nights, zine launchings and workshops, book donation drives, literary events, pop-up activities and so much more.

We are also proud to have been of help in the founding of Masá Book Club and Timog Literary Circle. TBH, this is a lot for a year! And something to be very proud of.

But in the midst of collaborations, Alitaptap Bookshop is actually just a one-woman team at the core. With travels needed for my full-time job and other schedule demands, handling the bookshop full-time as well had been quite challenging.

So it has been decided that it's time we take a break. :) But we're still going to be around.

We're still going to:
✅ organize pop-up activities
✅ organize literary events
✅ organize zine launching-workshops
✅ meet for book club meetings

We will still be here doing collaborations. You can still message us for book availability and we will still get back to you as soon as we can. :) Yes, you can still order online.

As they say, you can't pour from an empty cup. Let us take time to fill up our cups and we will be back.

✨ ALITAPTAP 1ST ANNIVERSARY ✨

More than providing access to books and encouraging love for reading, Alitaptap Bookshop also advocates for local literature.

Nagkaroon tayong ng poetry performances, zine making workshops, zine launching events, at pop-up events in support also of local artists and small businesses.

In celebration of our first anniversary, we partnered with Kalipay Café to hold "Panaysayon sang Manunulat: Reflections, struggles, and the soul of storytelling." Nakasama natin ang writers na sina Andrea D. Lim, Hannah Adtoon Leceña, at Jade Mark Capiñanes na mga manunulat din ng SOX at nasa ibang lugar na for work and studies.

Alitaptap Bookshop was created to provide a safe space for readers, writers, and artists. This is a community we're trying to build. If you wish to collaborate with us for similar events, i-message niyo lang kami. :) Together, let's build a community we can all call home.

You're welcome here! 🫶🫂

✨ALITAPTAP TURNS ONE!✨

That entire year since we opened the bookshop turned out to be quite an adventure. We took the risk, not knowing what lies ahead but God gifted us with opportunities to connect and form a community.

Alitaptap Bookshop was formed with the advocacy for reading and access to books at the forefront. It continues to be that way. :)

Hindi pa tapos ang celebration. Kitakits bukas sa Kalipay Café para sa ating author talk "Panaysayon sang Manunulat: reflections, struggles, and the soul of storytelling". Come, celebrate with us! 🎉🫶

A young boy, probably 8 to 9 years old, came to the bookshop today. He was handing out his palm asking for money. And then he looked around, saw the books and asked what this place was. "Ano na diri, te? School ni siya?"

When I told him we sell books and he can also read the books on display, he asked "Pila pud magbasa te?". I told him it's free! People here read for free and you only pay if you want to buy the books and take home.

He then shared he has a younger sibling, currently in Grade 3 in Brgy. Morales. When asked if he is also studying, he said no. "Bulos-bulos lang kami", saying education for him and his sibling is taken in turns. It's his sibling's turn now.

"Pirmi lang man ga-away away to sa balay." It's worth noting that the kid wasn't even in the shop for five minutes and I didn't ask questions relating to his domestic situations but he felt like he wanted and needed to share. He wasn't even soliciting sympathy, he was just sharing very casually.

He can read, he said. I took an illustrated copy of Thomas and Friends book and showed him. He seemed to like it. I gave him the book and he was very quick to say thank you before he sped off excitedly.

I didn't even have the chance to ask his name. But thank you for the trust in sharing your story, young kid. I hope you liked the book and I hope you come back to read more. You're welcome here.

And I hope someday it will be your turn, too, in school and in life.
