Five days of learning, training, and putting mountain skills into practice, for the second time.

I had the opportunity to attend the Basic Mountaineering Course once again, and took on the role of documenting every activity, training session, and experience along the way.

The course was about preparation, discipline, teamwork, and knowing how to move responsibly in the mountains.

Grateful to the organizers, instructors, staff, and every volunteer who shared their time, knowledge, and effort to make this five-day course a success. Your work behind the scenes made every activity possible.

When I was in high school, I used to dream of contributing an Insider Tip to Smile Magazine, the onboard magazine of Cebu Pacific Air, sharing little discoveries and recommendations from the places I would get to explore around the Philippines.

That dream became a reality.

Now, this is my third time contributing, featuring another destination I had the opportunity to discover through the work that has allowed me to explore different parts of the country.

From simply dreaming of seeing my name on the pages of Smile to actually contributing for the third time, what a journey it has been.

A big thank you to the people who continue to give me the opportunity to share my experiences and recommendations. Thank you for giving these stories and destinations a space in Smile's pages.

I’m grateful that the places I get to visit, the experiences I get to have, and the stories I get to tell can find their way onto the pages of Smile and hopefully inspire more people to explore the Philippines.

If you happen to fly with Cebu Pacific and come across this issue of Smile Magazine, please send me a copy if you can. It would mean a lot to have one for my collection.

Update: Pinutol yung puno ng malunggay para walang dumadapong Katala.

Yes, the Red-vented Cockatoo, or Katala, has historically and locally been considered an agricultural pest. Their highly adaptable feeding habits have caused friction with human communities, especially in areas where they forage on crops.

But today, the situation is very different. The species is critically endangered and is no longer common enough to be considered a widespread agricultural pest.

Some people may still see them as pests, but cutting down a malunggay tree simply to keep Katala from feeding on it feels especially unfortunate, particularly when the tree provides a food source, specifically its seeds, that we don't even consume.

There has to be a better way to coexist with one of our country's most threatened birds.

Upon arriving in Narra, Palawan, we heard a flock of Red-vented Cockatoos and spotted them perched in a tree, feeding together. I quickly grabbed a camera and started shooting.

Red-vented Cockatoos are critically endangered parrots native to the Philippines. Despite its small size, its loud personality can make an entire flock impossible to miss!
