| ML Partylist Representative Leila de Lima apologized to the Supreme Court (SC) after she criticized its decision that declared unconstitutional the impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte, saying it was based on wrong information.
In a statement, De Lima expressed regrets for releasing a scathing statement on the high court ruling before she could read its decision on the dismissal of impeachment for violation of the one-year bar rule and the right to due process.
"I regret and most humbly apologize to the [Supreme Court] for characterizing the impeachment decision as ex parte. That portion of my statement saying the House was not given an opportunity to comment on the impeachment petitions was grossly ill-advised, as it was based on patently wrong information," she said.
De Lima is referring to her earlier remarks accusing the high court of being "one-sided" by not hearing the side of the House of Representatives in the impeachment matters and described the ruling as not only unprecedented but also procedurally questionable.
"Definitely, it is not my intention to falsely accuse the [SC] of not considering the side of the respondent House of Representatives. It is plainly evident in the decision, which I was able to read only after the release of my statement yesterday, that the House's comments in the two impeachment petitions were indeed considered by the court," de Lima explained.
The lawmaker also expressed that she is ready to face any consequence for the said remarks.
"There is no excuse for this mistake, and I bear full responsibility for the same," she added.
