My son drowned for a few minutes when he was four. He survived, and he is grown now, but there is one thing he said afterward that our family never really knew how to explain.

When he woke up in the hospital, he told us he had been “above the blue water” and saw his father running with no shoes on. Then he said, “Daddy kept saying twelve, twelve, twelve.” We had not told him anything about the rescue. My husband had lost his shoes jumping the fence to get to the pool, and he later admitted that while doing chest compressions, he kept counting out loud to stop himself from panicking.

My son never became obsessed with death or heaven. He just said there was a soft place, a woman he didn’t know, and a feeling that “it wasn’t time to sleep.” Then he stopped talking about it. Children do that sometimes. They drop the impossible into the room and go back to asking for juice.

Has anyone here had a child describe something they should not have been able to know?
