MAUREEN KEIL SANTUYO
June 5, 2001 - April 19, 2026

We denounce and mourn the killing of our beloved sister, friend, and volunteer Maureen Keil Santuyo, and the 18 others massacred in Toboso on April 19.

Mau joined Krayola in early 2022, bringing with her a deep compassion for children from all walks of life. What began as a personal interest in early childhood education grew into years of concrete solidarity on the ground.

She saw the Lumad children of Mindanao; bombed, terrorized, displaced, massacred by the state—and was moved not to pity, but to action. She understood their plight as part of a broader threat: not only in education, but in every child's right to life. Mau knew something had to be done.

After studying the ALCADEV Lumad schools, she led the development of Krayola's curricula, and was always seen doing the heavy work of researching, teaching, and organizing in local urban poor communities.

Mau had a knack for people. To everyone, she was the same: lighthearted, creative, hilarious, genuine, and dependable. She was lovingly known as "Ate Mau/Joni" by children of the communities she's been to. She cried easily over other people's pain. She took others' struggles as her own. She showed up, without hesitation, whenever and wherever she was needed. She answered the call to be part of the making of history. And no amount of "terrorist" branding will ever erase the meaningful life she has lived.

Mau was full of love. That we know and will forever remember.

We join the families, friends, and loved ones of the Toboso 19 in the heed for a just, fair, and independent investigation. The AFP's contradictory statements, the mishandling of the crime scene and the victims' bodies, and the brazen, immoral, and state-funded trolling on the internet are utterly unacceptable. To let this pass is to allow the same violations to happen again.
