Pinangunahan ni Executive Director Arnold โ€œAliโ€ I. Atienza at Engr.

In support of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.โ€™s call to strengthen local industries and promote sustainable livelihoods, PhilFIDA under the leadership of Executive Director Arnold โ€œAliโ€ I. Atienza and PhilFIDA Region XI guided by OIC-Regional Director Irma Rodis, conducted a Skills Training on Abaca Fiber Processing: Scrunch and Packaging Making at Salangat Inland Resort, Brgy. Sto. Niรฑo, Talaingod, Davao del Norte.

The two-day training gathered local farmers, youth, and partner agencies including DTI and the 56th IBโ€“Bravo Company, to learn the techniques of abaca scrunch making and eco-friendly packaging. Participants eagerly took part in hands-on sessions that showcased the artistry and versatility of abaca. The session emphasized how simple materials can be transformed into value-added products with market potential.

Through this initiative, PhilFIDA continues to empower communities by developing their skills, supporting the abaca industry, and promoting inclusive growth for local fiber farmers and artisans across the country.

Masbate known as the countryโ€™s โ€œCattle Capitalโ€ is taking on a new title as it ventures into the world of abaca! Once famous mainly for its vast grasslands and thriving livestock and fisheries industries, Masbate is now making history with its first-ever PhilFIDA-assisted abaca farmโ€”a big step toward diversifying the provinceโ€™s agricultural landscape.

The initiative was led by Atty. Ramir Alindogan, a proud Masbateรฑo who was inspired to start abaca farming after seeing a post about its success in Cotabato. Guided by the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) under the leadership of Executive Director Arnold โ€œAliโ€ I. Atienza and in line with the directives of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. to strengthen the fiber industry, Atty. Alindoganโ€™s vision came to life with full support from PhilFIDA OIC-Regional Director Mary Anne R. Molina.

Through the technical expertise of Engr. Brent Baltazar B. Marbella and the Sorsogon Fiber Experiment Station (SFES) team, abaca seedlings were successfully planted in 2022 and by September 2025, the farm celebrated its first successful harvest! The team also conducted fiber quality assessments and harvesting demonstrations using the Modified Abaca Stripping Knife (MASK), marking a breakthrough for abaca production in the province.

This milestone shows how passion, perseverance, and partnership can open new doors for agricultural innovation. With continued support from the government and local stakeholders, Masbate is now officially part of the growing map of abaca-producing provinces in the Philippines, a proof that with dedication, anything can grow, even where it never has before.

In support of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.โ€™s vision to strengthen the agriculture sector and promote sustainable livelihood opportunities, the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA), under the leadership of Executive Director Arnold โ€œAliโ€ I. Atienza, conducted a Skills Training on Basic Cotton Handloom Weaving, at Barangay Salacafe, Tboli, South Cotabato. The five-day training gathered 15 women from the Salacafe Women Organization, equipping them with fundamental weaving techniques and entrepreneurial skills to transform local cotton fibers into valuable handwoven products.

The activity was led by Ms. Jenny Rondina, Provincial Fiber Officer of South Cotabato, with expert guidance from seasoned handloom weavers Ms. Karen Cayawan and Mr. Arthur Gulili from Polomolok, South Cotabato. Participants engaged in intensive hands-on sessions on thread winding, warping, drafting, denting, and basic weaving culminating in the production of scarves, malongs, and tubaos. The initiative also aims to empower women in Barangay Salacafe, a community near Lake Holon, to start small weaving enterprises and elevate their crafts for local and tourism markets.

During the Culmination Program held on September 19, 2025, local officials including Brgy. Captain Juneto Baway, OMAG-Tboli OIC Ms. Ailene Malasador, and HVCP Coordinator Mr. Leo Zernan Castillo joined the closing ceremony. Brgy. Captain Baway expressed his support through a โ‚ฑ5,000.00 seed fund for the association, while OMAG-Tboli distributed farm tools and vegetable seeds to further sustain their livelihood.

Through this initiative, PhilFIDA continues to advance its mandate of revitalizing the countryโ€™s natural fiber industry, empowering rural women, and promoting Filipino weaving heritage.
