The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) led by PhilFIDA Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza and OIC-Regional Director Keven R. Badon conducted a courtesy visit and coordination meeting with the City Mayor of Pagadian, Hon. Samuel “Sammy” Co, together with representatives from the City Administrator’s Office, Planning Division, Executive Assistance, Budget Office, and Barangay officials.

The meeting served as a platform to strengthen institutional coordination and discuss areas of collaboration in support of local development initiatives, particularly those aligned with PhilFIDA’s mandate on fiber crop development and industry support.

PhilFIDA extends its appreciation to the City Government of Pagadian for the warm reception and continued partnership toward inclusive and sustainable development.

The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA), through its Research Division, conducted its 2025 Year-End Performance Assessment of PPAs, Review of SOPs, and Crafting of the Citizen’s Charter for Research Processes from December 15–19, 2025 at Ramada Manila Central, Binondo, Manila, bringing together Regional Research Units to review accomplishments, address challenges, and set priorities for FY 2026.

Discussions focused on enhancing the relevance of research to stakeholders, improving operational efficiency, strengthening compliance with quality and risk management systems, and aligning research outputs with national and regional development goals. Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza emphasized the need to harmonize PhilFIDA initiatives, practice prudent resource management, and ensure that research and technology investments deliver tangible benefits to abaca farmer-beneficiaries.

Across regions, strong progress was noted in germplasm collection, conservation, and evaluation, as well as in planting material production and distribution, with several regions exceeding targets for abaca, sisal, cotton, and mulberry. The activity underscored the application of Risk-Based Thinking, with regions addressing challenges such as manpower gaps and weather disruptions through adaptive mitigation strategies and identifying opportunities in capacity building, livelihood-linked initiatives, and climate-responsive research.

In line with the vision of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to boost agricultural productivity and rural development, the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) continues to advance sustainable fiber crop development and strengthen the abaca industry in Zamboanga del Norte.

Through the leadership of the PhilFIDA Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza with Regional Office IX guided by OIC-Regional Director Keven R. Badon, and in collaboration with Hon. Congressman Adrian A. Amatong and the Provincial Government, quality abaca planting materials were distributed to beneficiary local government units across the 3rd District of Zamboanga del Norte, including conflict-affected areas.

With the support of Cong. Amatong and ten (10) Job Order personnel from the Provincial Government, the distribution covered LGU Liloy (2,400 suckers), LGU Sibuco (20,000 seedpieces), LGU Godod (15,000 seedpieces), and LGU Sirawai (5,000 seedpieces), ensuring timely and equitable access to planting materials for abaca farmers.

Any remaining planting materials have been reserved for distribution in the succeeding year to sustain production, building on earlier support extended to LGU Liloy (5,000 suckers) and LGU Salug (5,000 seedpieces)—a continuing commitment to farmer empowerment and a resilient Philippine fiber industry.

The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA), through its Technical Assistance Division (TAD), conducted a three-day Year-End Assessment-Workshop on Program Implementation and Strategic Planning for FY 2026–2027, from December 9-11, 2025 at the DAP Conference Center in Tagaytay City.

The activity focused on assessing the implementation of TAD’s Programs, Projects, and Activities (PPAs) for FY 2025, while formulating strategic plans for FY 2026 and undertaking Work and Financial Planning for FY 2027. It was attended by PhilFIDA’s Executive Director, OIC-Deputy Executive Director, Division Chiefs, Section Heads, Regional Directors, and Technical Assistance Unit Heads fostering collaborative discussions on development strategies and sustained fiber industry growth.

During the workshop, Executive Director Arnold “Ali” Atienza delivered an inspiring and challenging message, highlighting the need to increase production capacity and expand the utilization of fiber crops into larger industries such as paper, plastics, wood, and textiles. He emphasized innovation, collaboration, improved processing technologies, and stronger market linkages as key drivers of sustainable industry growth.

The workshop also highlighted the importance of strengthening support systems for farmers and stakeholders, including access to quality planting materials, technical training on sustainable farming practices, and improved access to financing and market opportunities. These initiatives aim to empower farmers, enhance productivity, and promote a competitive and resilient fiber industry.

Serving as a platform for sharing best practices and addressing on-the-ground challenges, the activity reinforced regional alignment and collective commitment toward achieving PhilFIDA’s national fiber industry development goals.

The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) formally turned over the newly completed Piña Processing Center to the Piña Farmers and Weavers Association (PWAFA) in Brgy. Fulgencio, Balete, Aklan. The activity was hosted by PhilFIDA Region VI led by OIC-Regional Director Mary Ann G. Nerio, as part of the region’s continued support to the expansion of the piña industry in Western Visayas.

The facility provides a dedicated area for processing, drying, finishing, and storage, helping farmers and weavers improve product quality, minimize post-harvest losses, and enhance production efficiency. By centralizing operations, the Center will enable the community to better meet the rising demand for piña fiber and woven goods.

PhilFIDA Executive Director Arnold “Ali” I. Atienza highlighted that the Center is not just an infrastructure project but an investment in local livelihoods and industry growth. Local officials, including Balete Mayor Hon. Prescilla Gale S. Calizo, along with other community leaders, expressed strong support for the initiative and its role in preserving traditional weaving and creating new economic opportunities.

PWAFA President Liezel D. Bandiola accepted the facility on behalf of the group, expressing gratitude for the support extended to farmers and weavers. The project aligns with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and the guidance of DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. to uplift fiber-producing communities and strengthen the competitiveness of the country’s traditional fiber industries.

📌 𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞 | In support of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s vision to uplift farmers and modernize Philippine agriculture, PhilFIDA through its Fiber Utilization and Technology Division proudly introduces the Mechanical Pineapple Leaf Scraper (MPLAS).

The MPLAS can process 800–900 pineapple leaves in just seven hours, tripling manual output and making fiber extraction faster, safer, and more sustainable.

Executive Director Arnold “Ali” Atienza emphasized that mechanization is key to revitalizing the piña fiber industry, strengthening the value chain, and empowering communities through higher productivity and value-adding opportunities.

A refined unit is now en route to Aklan for field testing as we push forward toward a modern, competitive, and farmer-centered fiber sector.

The Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) is taking major steps to revive the country’s declining pineapple fiber sector through the development of a mechanized pineapple leaf scraping machine.

The Mechanical Pineapple Leaf Scraper (MPLAS), created last year, aims to address long-standing production bottlenecks that have slowed the growth of piña and other natural fiber industries.
