Tesla and Ford: Rivals With Respect

Tesla and Ford may battle for dominance in the EV market, but their top leaders are openly trading praise for each other’s breakthroughs.

Ford just unveiled a bold new production system for electric vehicles — a large-scale method aimed at slashing costs and streamlining assembly. The first test will come in 2027 with a midsize four-door electric pickup priced around $30,000. Internally, Ford calls it their “Model T Moment,” a reinvention of the assembly line that the company first pioneered over a century ago.

Elon Musk quickly weighed in, giving Ford credit for inventing mass manufacturing of complex products, bluntly stating: “everyone else copied.” His comment followed Ford CEO Jim Farley’s reflection on how the original assembly line put cars within reach of the masses — and how today’s challenge is to reinvent that legacy for EVs.

Doug Field, Ford’s Chief EV, Digital and Design Officer — and a former Tesla executive — even echoed Musk’s famous mantra: “the best part is no part” when describing the new approach.

Despite fierce competition, the two companies share a surprising thread of mutual admiration. Farley has openly praised Musk for scaling EVs like the Model 3 and Model Y in the spirit of Henry Ford himself — even calling Musk “an incredible person.”
