"𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐝𝐨𝐦" 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐛𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐡!
I was initially hesitant to watch it—una, mahal kaya ng sine ngayon; pangalawa, I thought it might be another typical offering; at pangatlo, umuulan pa. Haha! But the buzz surrounding its promotions and the intriguing concept of an uncolonized Philippines drew me in. Safe to say, I was blown away.
Vic Sotto as Lakan Makisig is a revelation. This isn’t the comedic Bossing we’ve grown used to; this is Vic Sotto stepping into his dramatic era, delivering a powerful performance that left me speechless. His scenes with Piolo Pascual, especially their confrontation behind bars, are masterfully acted and brimming with tension. The dialogue? Pure gold—parang mala-balagtasan! Naalala ko tuloy ang ilan sa mga paborito kong Korean drama na ang tema ay nasa Joseon era.
The film’s concept is its biggest strength—what if the Philippines wasn’t colonized? It’s a thought-provoking journey into a reimagined past that forces you to reflect on the present and dream of a better future. The production design and world-building are top-notch, fully immersing viewers in the Kingdom of Kalayaan. Every scene feels meticulously crafted, and it shows. Nag-research ang mga lola!
Yes, there are minor flaws, but these don’t overshadow the film’s brilliance. This is a movie that entertains and educates, leaving you with questions about identity, values, and nationhood.
I left the cinema hoping for a sequel because this world deserves further exploration. Hats off to the entire team behind The Kingdom! Go watch it—it’s not just a movie; it’s an experience.
