Five Truths About St. Mary Magdalene
1. Revered as “Apostle to the Apostles”
+ St. Mary Magdalene was given this title because she was the first to proclaim the Resurrection to the Apostles. Pope Francis elevated her liturgical memorial to a Feast in 2016, noting her role as the “Apostle to the Apostles” (Apostola Apostolorum).
The Congregation for Divine Worship (2016): “She is the witness to the Risen Christ and announces the central message of Easter.”
CCC 641: “Mary Magdalene and the holy women… were the first to encounter the Risen One and thus the first messengers of Christ’s Resurrection for the apostles themselves.”
2. NOT a pr******te
+ The Church does not identify Mary Magdalene with the unnamed sinful woman in Luke 7 or with Mary of Bethany. The confusion began with Pope Gregory the Great in the 6th century but has since been clarified.
Pope Benedict XVI (General Audience, May 17, 2006): “She is presented as a disciple of the Lord who plays a leading role in the Gospels and not as a penitent pr******te.”
Pontifical Biblical Commission affirms there is no biblical basis for conflating these three Marys.
3. The FIRST to see Jesus after His Resurrection
+ In all four Gospels, Mary Magdalene plays a key role in the discovery of the empty tomb, and in John 20:11-18, she is the first to see and speak with the risen Lord.
John 20:14-18 – Jesus appears first to Mary and tells her: “Go to my brothers…”
Mark 16:9 – “Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene…”
4. The woman from whom our Lord “DROVE OUT seven demons”
+ Mary Magdalene is clearly identified in Luke 8:2 as the woman “from whom seven demons had gone out.”
Luke 8:1-2 – “…and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out…”
5. She remained with Jesus during His last agony on the Cross
+ Mary Magdalene was present at the crucifixion, standing near the cross along with the Virgin Mary.
John 19:25 – “But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother… and Mary Magdalene.”
CCC 641 affirms that women, including Mary Magdalene, “remained in faithful love at the foot of the Cross.”
