VETMED STUDENTS HOLD DONATION DRIVE FOR PETS AFFECTED BY EARTHQUAKE IN BOGO

NEWS UPDATE:The Veterinary Medicine Student Council of Southwestern University PHINMA is organizing a donation drive for pets and their owners who were affected by the magnitude 6.9 earthquake.

They are asking for the following:
• First aid kits
• Veterinary emergency drugs
• Pet food (cats & dogs)
• Clean water
• Relief goods for pet owners

In-kind donations may be sent to Shambala Veterinary Clinic, Hernan Cortes St., Subangdaku, Mandaue City while cash donations may be sent via GCash to Zyra Van Ortiz at 09760390412.

A ghost was born in Nicaragua… and it has paws.

On July 20, 2023, the Thomas Belt Zoo welcomed a cub unlike any other. A puma, yes—but with a coat as white as fresh snow and eyes pale like moonlight. They named it Itzae, meaning “Gift of God” in Mayan. And honestly? That feels pretty spot on.

Why all the buzz? Because albino pumas are basically unicorns in the animal kingdom. Only three others have ever been recorded in the entire world. Think about that. Out of all the forests, all the mountains, all the hidden dens on Earth… only four albino pumas have ever existed that we know of. Itzae is living history.

Albinism is what gives Itzae that ghostly beauty. The condition strips away pigment, leaving animals vulnerable to sun, predators, and sometimes even health issues. It makes survival harder—but also turns them into something breathtaking. Fragility and strength in the same heartbeat.

For scientists, Itzae is a rare chance to study genetics and biodiversity in real time. Understanding animals like this can reveal secrets about how species adapt, survive, and evolve. But for everyone else, it’s simpler: this tiny cub is proof that nature still writes plot twists better than any human storyteller.

Picture it: in the dense green heart of Nicaragua, among all the usual earthy browns and jungle shadows, suddenly there’s this flash of white. A living paradox. A miracle in fur. The White Ghost of Nicaragua.
