‼️IS THIS ANOTHER MANGUAD MURDER — IN SOPHIA’S FORM?‼️
But this time, her parents were home. In the same house.😔💔
‼️ SAKPAN NA JUD. NO MORE EXCUSES. NO MORE DELAYS.
Justice for Sophia Marie G. Coquilla.
💔 What Really Happened?
In the quiet neighborhood of Brgy. La Filipina, Tagum City, the unthinkable happened.
Sophia Marie G. Coquilla, only 19 years old, was brutally murdered inside her own bedroom — in her own home, while her parents were asleep in separate air-conditioned rooms, unaware of the horrific act unfolding just meters away.
She was stabbed 38 times.
She was not heard.
She was not saved.
🎓 Who Was Sophia?
• 📚 Former Senior High School student at Ateneo de Davao University (SHA Batch 2024)
• 🏅 Graduated with honors — 3rd Honorable Mention
• 🎓 Incoming freshman at University of the Philippines (2025)
• 💡 Known for her intelligence, kindness, and big dreams
Her life was just beginning — now, it has been violently cut short.
🧒🏽 The Suspects? Both Are Minors.
The alleged killers are two minors who entered the Coquilla residence to steal.
📦 Reported stolen items include:
• 💻 Laptop
• 📱 Cellphone
• ⌚ Watch
• 📱 Tablet
When Sophia reportedly woke up, they panicked — and stabbed her 38 times, leaving her lifeless in her own bed.
She was found only when it was too late.
🛠️ What Was Used to Murder Her?
Investigators recovered several items from the crime scene believed to have been used in the killing:
• 🪚 Grass cutter
• 🍲 Bowl
• 🏋️ Dumbbell
• 🧣 Handkerchief
These objects were allegedly used to kill her in a fit of panic and cruelty.
📹 What Did the Investigation Reveal?
Police acted swiftly. Thanks to:
• 🔍 CCTV footage
• 👁️🗨️ Witness testimonies
• 🧑✈️ An alleged confession from one suspect
The two minors were identified and apprehended.
BUT…
⚠️ They Are Not in Jail.
Instead, they are under DSWD custody, protected by law simply because of their age.
⚖️ Why Are They Not in Jail?
Because of RA 9344 — the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006
📘 What the law says:
• 🧒 Under 15 years old: No criminal liability
• 👦 Ages 15 to 17, if acting “without discernment”: Also no jail time
➡️ Even if confessed, they could walk free in just a few years, after so-called “rehabilitation.”
📛 In cases of heinous crimes like r**e or murder, this becomes a loophole for impunity.
🛏️ Where Were Her Parents?
Inside the same house.
In separate, air-conditioned rooms.
They heard nothing.
Sophia was attacked and stabbed 38 times — and no one came to help her.
🕊️ Who Was Sophia — Beyond the Headlines?
• 🎓 An honor student from Ateneo de Davao University
• 🧠 A new freshman at University of the Philippines
• 🌱 A young woman full of purpose, kindness, and dreams
• 👧 A beloved daughter, a loyal friend, and a shining soul
Her dreams were real. Her life was bright.
Someone chose to end it.
📢 The Law Must Change.
This is no longer just about one case — it’s about how we protect victims and hold killers accountable, regardless of age.
We demand:
✅ A review of “discernment” clauses for violent crimes
✅ Stricter protocols for heinous crimes involving minors
✅ Legal balance between rehabilitation and justice
✅ Public protection as a legal priority
👪 Parents, Wake Up. You Are the First Line of Defense.
Every family must do their part. Don’t wait until it’s your child.
1. 👥 Know your child’s friends — and their families
2. 💻 Monitor behavior — both online and offline
3. 🕰️ Set firm boundaries — curfews, safety rules
4. 🚪 Check on them — even inside your own home
5. 🧠 Teach them how to recognize danger
6. 👀 Watch for signs of violence or criminal behavior in peers
7. 🙏 Don’t assume safety — be proactive
🚨 This Is Not Just a Family’s Tragedy. It’s a National Wake-Up Call.
📍 Tagum. Davao. Philippines.
We are not safe unless we demand change — now.
Let Sophia Marie Coquilla’s name echo through every barangay, city, and courtroom.
Let her death be the spark for real accountability and reform.
