Eastern Visayas Makes Strides in Reducing Adolescent Pregnancy by Strengthening Youth Leadership and Governance.

Through the Expanded Youth Leadership and Governance Programme ( ) under the Joint Programme on Accelerating the Reduction of Adolescent Pregnancy ( ), implemented by UNFPA, the United Nations s*xual and reproductive health agency, UNICEF Philippines , and World Health Organization Philippines with the support of the Korea International Cooperation Agency Philippines - KOICA 필리핀사무소 —Samar and Southern Leyte have made remarkable strides in improving adolescent s*xual and reproductive health.

📉 Southern Leyte achieved a 29% reduction in adolescent birth rate in just 22 months, already surpassing 2026 targets two years early.

📈 Samar recorded a 70% increase in contraceptive use and a 6x rise in ASRHR budgets, alongside innovative initiatives supporting adolescents and their families.

These milestones were made possible by stronger local governance, increased investments, and the active participation of young people themselves. With commitment, collaboration, and youth leadership, Region 8 is paving the way for healthier, more empowered futures.

Our story for UNFPA Philippines featured during a recent Summit.

UNFPA in the Philippines joined the “Becoming: Philippine Sexual Wellness Summit 2025,” an event organized by Unprude last September 14 at Podium Hall. This year’s theme, “Sex Ed for All,” brought parents, families, civil society, and the private sector, together—to create a safe space for open conversations about s*x and s*xual health, free from fear and shame.
In his keynote presentation, Assistant Representative Jose Roi Avena provided an overview of adolescent pregnancy in the Philippines. He urged for more investment in young people through age-appropriate reproductive health education and quality services.

Shiela's life changed drastically after an unintended pregnancy at 15, but she soon found vital community support at an adolescent-friendly health facility. 🏥

There, she received holistic care—from essential maternal and mental healthcare to peer education—bolstered by the Joint Programme on Accelerating the Reduction of Adolescent Pregnancy (JPARAP), supported by Korea International Cooperation Agency Philippines - KOICA 필리핀사무소. With the dedicated help of local health workers and youth leaders, Shiela regained her footing, returned to school, and now dreams of a brighter future for herself and her baby.

As approaches, we stand firmly behind Shiela and all adolescent mothers. This year’s theme—‘Empowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful world’—reminds us that every young person deserves the tools, rights, and support to make informed choices about their future. By investing in youth‑friendly healthcare, education, mental health, and reproductive rights, we’re not just transforming individual lives—we’re shaping a fairer, more hopeful world for us all.

Every day in the Philippines 🇵🇭, 5 women die due to preventable causes linked to pregnancy or childbirth.

Despite a notable decline from 2021, these are not mere numbers—but lives that could be saved with timely, quality care. 🤰

🏥 is a powerful reminder that health systems must work for everyone—and we have to to achieve zero maternal deaths.
