DW Design Series — Key-Tuned Setup 🥁🔧
For this DW Design Series kit, I tuned the toms in a specific pitch relationship:
10” — B, 2nd Octave
12” — F #, 2nd Octave
16” — C #, 2nd Octave
All fitted with Remo Powerstroke 4 Clear heads.
As a Drum Tech, ang goal ko dito is hindi lang basta mataas o mababa ang tuning. Gusto ko may musical relationship between the toms.
The 10” B gives you a clear and focused high tom.
The 12” F # sits nicely below it, giving a smooth transition.
Then the 16” C # gives you that deep, low-end body.
LIVE SOUND
Live, this setup will sound tight, controlled, punchy, and easy to hear.
The Powerstroke 4 Clear heads help control some of the unwanted overtones, so hindi siya masyadong “boingy” or kalat.
Kapag tinamaan mo ang toms, you get a clear attack + controlled sustain + solid low-end.
Lalo na sa live shows, importanteng marinig ang bawat tom kahit maraming instruments sa stage.
RECORDING
For recording, maganda ito because the pitches have a clear relationship.
Kapag nag-roll ka from 10 → 12 → 16, hindi lang random notes ang maririnig.
B → F # → C #
May musical movement siya.
The Powerstroke 4 Clear also gives the recording a more focused and controlled tone, especially kapag close-mic’d.
Pero as always, hindi lang tuning ang importante.
Shell + head + tuning + mic placement + playing style = final sound.
As a Drum Tech, my job is to make sure na bago pa makarating sa microphone or PA, the drums are already speaking correctly.
Tune with intention.
Set with purpose.
Let the drummer play. 🥁🔧
