P1.3 million ma*****na seized, two arrested in Davao City drug bust

DAVAO CITY — Two men were arrested Wednesday afternoon in a drug buy-bust operation that netted an estimated P1.3 million worth of suspected ma*****na in Calinan District, police said.

The suspects — an unemployed 19-year-old and a 20-year-old construction worker — were apprehended at Purok 9, Barangay Lacson after they allegedly sold dried ma*****na leaves worth P12,000 to an undercover police officer, according to a report from the City Police Office (DCPO).

Authorities seized from the suspects seven kilograms of suspected ma*****na in brick form, along with drug paraphernalia and a weighing scale, police said.

The suspects will face charges for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Catbalogan native places 9th in civil engineering board exam

CATBALOGAN, Samar — A former student of Samar College placed ninth in the 2026 Civil Engineering Licensure Examination, adding another achievement to his record that dates back to his elementary days in the city.

Lee Justin Rondina, now an engineer, earned a rating of 91.40 percent in the board exam while studying at Eastern Visayas State University in Tacloban. He was the class valedictorian of Samar College's elementary department in 2015.

Rondina's mother, a teacher, also passed the Philippine Bar Examinations in the results released this year.

VARGAS SLAMS REVILLAME OVER ‘SLAP’ GESTURE: ‘I WAS BOTHERED’

MANILA – Comedian Tuesday Vargas has publicly criticized veteran television host Willie Revillame over an on-air gesture she perceived as threatening towards a female dancer, the latest controversy to hit the long-time entertainer.

In a Facebook post on Friday, Vargas said she was more disturbed by Revillame's reaction to a fellow host's verbal misstep than the initial mistake itself during a recent episode of the game show "Wilyonaryo."

Vargas stated that the main host made a gesture appearing to slap a woman while saying, "I will hit you there," a remark she found deeply concerning.

"I wasn't bothered by the 'Hold the...' comment. I was bothered by what the main host said and how he even demonstrated as if he was going to slap a woman while saying, 'I will hit you there,'" Vargas wrote in her post.

The incident adds to a history of public scrutiny for Revillame, who has faced criticism in the past for his on-air conduct toward staff and crew. During a dry run for the show in December, video footage circulated showing Revillame expressing visible irritation at his production team over contestant selection.

Vargas did not specify if she planned to take further action. Representatives for Revillame have not yet issued a response to the comedian's statement.

Judge Ma. Cristina Laderas Dies; Wake Held in Quezon City and Bulacan

Judge Ma. Cristina Laderas, presiding judge of Regional Trial Court Branch 85 in Malolos and regional director for Bulacan's 1st District of the Philippine Women Judges Association, has died.

Viewing will be held at Arlington Memorial Chapel in Quezon City beginning Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2026, at 4 p.m. in Felicidad 1 Hall.

Additional viewing will take place at San Juan Parish in Hagonoy, Bulacan, starting Friday, Feb. 13, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The Philippine Women Judges Association expressed condolences to Laderas' family and loved ones.

Details about the cause of death and funeral arrangements were not immediately available.

Content Creator Walks Out of Bataraza Event, Cites Poor Treatment

BATARAZA, Palawan — Content creator Ferdinand Dela Merced walked out of an event here Jan. 26, saying organizers failed to provide him breakfast and prioritized a paid guest over him.

Dela Merced detailed his experience in a Facebook post, saying he felt dizzy from hunger after his breakfast was not arranged before a parade. He said he felt organizers gave preferential treatment to Elias JTV, a paid guest, while he attended as an unpaid volunteer.

Dela Merced left for Brooke's Point but returned that evening after organizers invited him back. He said it would likely be his last participation in events in the area.

In a subsequent post, Dela Merced said he was "out in Palawan" and "out on invites," adding he was heading to Mindoro.

Event organizers and Elias JTV have not issued official statements on Dela Merced's allegations.

The incident has sparked discussion on social media about proper treatment and recognition of guests and volunteers at public events.

Philippine troops conduct patrol to bolster security in restive Basilan

Soldiers from the Philippine Army’s 32nd Infantry (Daredevil) Battalion conducted a perimeter patrol in a remote village of Basilan province on Thursday, aiming to reinforce security and operational readiness in the volatile region, military officials said.

A squad from Bravo Company, led by Sergeant Almer Custada, carried out the operation in Barangay Upper Cabengbeng, Sumisip, focusing on perimeter defense, early threat detection, and terrain familiarization, according to a statement released by the battalion.

The troops performed pre-combat inspections before executing a “systematic prophylactic patrol” along key routes, maintaining constant communication with their command post, the statement added.

No hostile activity or enemy presence was reported during the mission, which concluded with all personnel safely returning to base after completing accountability checks and a post-activity review.

Lieutenant Colonel Gerwin Maghuyop, commanding officer of the 32nd Infantry Battalion, emphasized that such patrols are crucial for maintaining situational awareness, deterring potential threats, and ensuring the safety of local communities.

“The successful mission contributes to the sustained peace and stability in the area,” Maghuyop said, reaffirming the unit’s commitment to ongoing security operations in Basilan, a known stronghold of armed groups in the southern Philippines.

The operation is part of the military’s broader efforts to secure the region under the government’s campaign for a “Matatag na Sandigan ng Bagong Pilipinas” (Strong Foundation for a New Philippines).

Philippine authorities seize $2.1 million worth of m**h at Manila airport

Philippine authorities have seized m**hamphetamine worth 114.5 million pesos ($2.1 million) and arrested three suspects at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), officials announced Sunday.

The NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group (NAIA-IADITG) confirmed the confiscation of approximately 16.8 kilograms of white crystalline substance, suspected to be m**hamphetamine hydrochloride, during an interdiction operation at the airport’s Pair-Pags Center on Thursday evening.

The operation, conducted at 6:54 p.m. local time on January 8, 2026 resulted in the arrest of three individuals linked to the shipment. The estimated street value of the seized drugs stands at 114,566,400 pesos ($2.1 million), according to the task group.

The Philippines remains a key transit point for illegal drugs in Southeast Asia, with authorities frequently intercepting large shipments at major entry points like NAIA.
