Felt a connection with Will and Eleven while watching Stranger Things on Netflix? Or a sudden urge to protect E.T. from the government intervention and cheer them as they escape the streets of suburbs by flying? Then, ๐ฒ๐๐
๐ ๐๐ ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐, a TTRPG system created by Hunters Entertainment in 2018, should be added to your game library. It's a rules-light, collaborative storytelling RPG where ordinary kids, teens, or adults uncover extraordinary mysteries lurking beneath the surface of their small town.
The collaborative worldbuilding within the game turned out to be one of my favorite features of Kids on Bikes. Before the adventure begins, everyone at the table will create the โtownโ by answering worldbuilding questionsโWho owns the local diner? What is that abandoned building everyone avoids and what secret does it hold? Which urban legend does the townspeople keep on believing? Instead of carrying the entire burden of creating a setting, the GM builds the world alongside the players. By the end of Session Zero, everyone is already invested because they helped shape the town they'll be exploring.
Creating your in-game character is just as refreshing as a tall glass of lemonade from that creepy local diner with flickering neon lights. Rather than rolling for your abilities, you assign different dice to each stat. Want to be the smartest kid in school? Give your highest die to "Brains." Living your fantasy as the hottest jock with a fearless blonde cheerleader girlfriend? Put your best die where it matters most. It's quick, intuitive, and lets you create exactly the character you envision.
Kids on Bikes also embraces failure in a meaningful way. Failed rolls award ๐๐ฑ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐๐ ๐ง๐ผ๐ธ๐ฒ๐ป๐ which you can spend to boost future rolls, with setbacks becoming opportunities instead of punishment. Combined with the ๐ฒ๐
๐ฝ๐น๐ผ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐโwhere rolling the highest number lets you roll again and add the resultโeven characters with smaller dice always have a chance to pull off something incredible. Every player gets their heroic moment.
If your group loves mystery, nostalgia, and collaborative storytelling, Kids on Bikes is absolutely worth checking out.
