This 21st of September, we commemorate the 53๐ง๐ anniversary of Ferdinand Marcos Sr. signing โ๏ธ for the Philippines to be put under ๐๐๐ง๐ฉ๐๐๐ก ๐๐๐ฌ. Officially declared two days later on the 23rd of September, this era is deemed to be one of the most crucial points in Philippine history ๐, calling for a revolution built on solidarity in the midst of oppression โ๏ธ.
As we look back on this era ๐, let us not forget the implications of what it meant under the guise of being golden ๐ฐ. The imposition of the Martial Law, more formally known as ๐๐ง๐ค๐๐ก๐๐ข๐๐ฉ๐๐ค๐ฃ ๐๐ค. 1081, which was made as a response to supposed communist threats ๐ฅ within the country and consequently suspended the writ of habeas corpus ๐ or the right to a fair trial. Subsequently, many Filipinos faced many hardships โ๐ฝ during the dictatorship that perpetuate our society to this day. These include but are not limited to:
An estimated number of 107,200 ๐๐๐จ๐๐จ of human rights violations including abduction, physical and psychological torture, arbitrary detention, and even killings according to Amnesty International
Corruption totalling 5 ๐ฉ๐ค 10 ๐๐๐ก๐ก๐๐ค๐ฃ ๐๐ค๐ก๐ก๐๐ง๐จ ๐ฌ๐ค๐ง๐ฉ๐ stolen from institutions like the World Bank
An exacerbation of poverty, especially for agricultural and labor workers whose wages dropped as low as 23 ๐ฅ๐๐จ๐ค๐จ
As we look back ๐บ on our history, let us never forget to reflect on the past, remember those who suffered and fought for our freedom through the People Power Revolution, and emphasize the need for justice โ๏ธ to protect the integrity of the Filipino people.
