Our Story
Kodao is a Philippine alternative media organization that documents and amplifies the struggles and aspirations of the Filipino people for democracy, development and liberation from social injustices. Founded in 2000, it produces videos and radio programs as well as news reports that seek to amplify the voices of marginalized sectors of society. It also helps in the establishment of community radio stations and regional multi-media outfits across the Philippines.
Kodao is a chapter of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines. It is a member of the International Association of Community Radio Broadcasters, People’s Alternative Media Network, and the Alliance of Community Media in SouthEast Asia. It has won awards and citations from the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas, Cultural Center of the Philippines, Gawad Agong, Pandayang Lino Brocka, Catholic Mass Media Awards, and others.
Kodao is named after the oldest indigenous form of calendar in the Philippines, a Lumad knotted rattan string whose every knot symbolizes a community event.
