UNIVERSITY UPDATE: In a memorandum released today, June 4, Vice President for Higher Education (HE) Czarina Saloma-Akpedonu, PhD announced that the temporary suspension on domestic and international travels for the HE Cluster faculty and staff has been lifted on June 1. Meanwhile, the same mobility restrictions for students will be lifted on July 1.

According to Saloma-Akpedonu, this decision was made to “balance appropriate caution with [the University’s] desire to resume the vital work of learning and service beyond [Ateneo’s] borders.”

The temporary suspension was first announced on March 28 in light of the global energy crisis, which affected air travel for HE staff and students, such as faculty-led trips and Summer Term Abroad.

Amid the mobility resumption, the University will implement cost-saving measures for school-funded travel following its decision to maintain last year’s tuition rates for the current AY 2026–2027.

UNIVERSITY UPDATE: Several University websites, including AISIS, will undergo maintenance and downtime on June 8, 10, and 15, from 5 to 7 PM.

According to an email from the Office of the Vice President for Digital Information and Technology Services (OVP-DITS), this will be done to keep AISIS “running reliably.” OVP-DITS notes that AISIS will be fully offline during these time windows.

Other affected websites include the parents’ AISIS portal, Ateneo WebPay, the Ateneo Load Revision website, the Ateneo Thesis Submission platform, Ateneo Integrated Faculty Information System, the Ateneo College Entrance Test website, and other related internal systems.

With this, OVP-DITS advised users to avoid using these sites during the maintenance period.

VOYAGER: The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has officially announced the start of the rainy season today, June 4, for the western sections of Luzon and the Visayas.

This development follows occasional to frequent rains observed over the past five days brought upon by the Habagat season. Periods of reduced rainfall, also known as monsoon breaks, may still occur and last for several days or weeks.

Despite the rainy season, PAGASA administrator Nathaniel Servando noted on Tuesday, June 2, that coastal and low-lying areas may retain high heat index levels until mid-June. Heat indices can remain higher for such areas due to hot and humid air.

FEATURES: Walking through Taguig City’s newest territory, one encounters a hole in a wall that links Bonifacio Global City to the community of South Cembo.

Formally known as ‘Butas’ or ‘Lagusan,’ the area is a home in a hole for Nanay Mila and Nanay Siony—elderly women in South Cembo—who navigate aging in the complexities of urban development and geographic politics.

NATIONAL UPDATE: The House of Representatives has passed House Bill No. 8389 on the third and final reading. This seeks to prohibit relatives within the second degree of consanguinity from simultaneously running for or holding elective positions within the same constituency or jurisdiction.

The measure was approved with 267 lawmakers voting in favor, 20 against, and seven abstaining. The bill, principally authored by Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III and Majority Leader Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” Marcos III, originally proposed a prohibition covering relatives within the fourth degree of consanguinity. However, the version approved on third reading covers only up to the second degree.

While this decision marks the furthest progress an anti-political dynasty bill has achieved since the 1987 Constitution mandated Congress to prohibit political dynasties through legislation, Akbayan Partylist Representative Chel Diokno criticized the measure, calling it a “pro-dynasty bill.” According to him, the currently approved version still allows political families to simultaneously hold positions across different levels of government.

NATIONAL UPDATE: Senator Sherwin “Win” Gatchalian has been elected Senate President Pro Tempore, serving as the acting Senate president beginning today, June 3.

This comes after Senator Chiz Escudero joined the Senate minority bloc, establishing a quorum and allowing the Senate plenary session to proceed.

At the start of the session today, Senator Tito Sotto moved for all elected Senate positions to be declared vacant. With no objections raised, senators proceeded to elect Gatchalian and reorganize committee leadership positions.

In line with this decision, Senator Erwin Tulfo was elected chairperson of the Blue Ribbon Committee, replacing Senator Rodante Marcoleta. Meanwhile, Senators Bam Aquino, Kiko Pangilinan, and Risa Hontiveros were elected chairpersons of the Committees on Basic Education, Agriculture, and Health, respectively.

In a joint statement, the new 12-member majority bloc stated that Senator Alan Peter Cayetano is no longer Senate President after senators voted to declare all elected positions vacant. The bloc clarified that while Gatchalian has not been elected Senate President, as the position requires 13 votes under the Constitution, the previous Senate presidency has been removed.

Cayetano has since claimed in a Facebook Live shortly after the session that he remains the “legitimate, legal, moral Senate President.” He also insisted that the the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing on flood control projects will proceed as scheduled on Thursday, June 4, despite Tulfo rescheduling the hearing to Monday, June 8.

Notably, the Cayetano-led bloc has remained absent from all Senate plenary sessions since June 1.
