UNIVERSITY UPDATE: Calling for accountability and systematic reform in the government, the Sanggunian, along with several student and youth organizations, released a unified anti-corruption statement on November 28.

In the statement, the undersigned reaffirmed the Ateneo community's responsibility to stand with movements for justice, emphasizing the University’s mission to form "persons for and with others." They also highlighted the growing solidarity on campus in recent weeks, noting support from employees, educators, administrators, and Church groups.

Moreover, the statement denounced the government and political dynasties, asserting that corruption is not a "victimless crime," as it perpetuates poverty and erodes essential public services.

The undersigned groups further urged for "full and uncompromising accountability," as well as broader political reforms beyond simple leadership succession. They also pressed for the exploration of democratic alternatives such as a People’s Transitional Council and a transparent Independent Commission for Infrastructure.

INTERNATIONAL UPDATE: The International Criminal Court (ICC) Appeals Chamber has unanimously rejected former president Rodrigo Duterte’s appeal for interim release.

In a decision read out today, November 28, the Appeals Chamber upheld in full the earlier ruling of Pre-Trial Chamber I, stating that the defense failed to demonstrate any errors in the original decision. Notably, the Appeals Chamber’s ruling is considered final, as there is no higher court within the ICC.

Separately, Duterte is also challenging a prior ruling issued on October 23 by the Pre-Trial Chamber affirming the Court’s jurisdiction over the case. As of writing, the appeal remains pending.

Under a persisting patriarchal society, the voices of many women continue to be silenced and subjugated by systems that protect powerful men.

In solidarity with the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women, The GUIDON stands with survivors of all sexual misconduct and abuse. With survivors of sexual violence often facing victim-blaming and bureaucratic processes, the publication emphasizes the need to listen to their stories in creating systems that truly value safe spaces and long-term justice for women.

UNIVERSITY UPDATE: Academic activities will continue, despite a potential strike by the Ateneo Employees and Workers Union (AEWU), according to a memorandum from the Vice President for Higher Education released today, November 25.

In response to housekeeping disruptions that may arise during the strike, the University advised the Ateneo community “to be more mindful than usual of cleanliness in using spaces and facilities.”

Moreover, the operations of the Rizal Library, laboratories, and cafeterias are expected to continue throughout the strike.

The memorandum noted that the strike may begin as early as December 2. This comes after the AEWU conducted a strike vote on November 21, during which members decided to proceed with the strike. This triggered a mandatory seven-day “cooling-off” period should conciliation efforts do not result in a settlement.

Notably, in a statement issued yesterday, November 24, the University said that both the Ateneo and AEWU maintained their respective positions on the labor dispute during a conciliation meeting held the same day with the National Conciliation and Mediation Board.

ICYMI: A film screening of “Delikado,” a documentary by Karl Malakunas, was held at the Leong Hall Auditorium on Friday, November 21. Organized by students of POLSC 121.30-GTH: Environmental Policies, the event also featured a talkback with civil society leaders.

The discussion speakers included Sambilog-Balik Bugsuk Movement Chairperson Romillano Calo, Molbog indigenous leader Jilimani Naseron, Vice Chairperson of Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya Pilipinas Ronnel Arambulo, and Palawan NGO Network Inc.’s Atty. Bobby Chan.

The film highlighted the dangers faced by environmental defenders working to preserve El Nido, Palawan’s wildlife and overall ecosystem. During the talkback session, Chan shared that ecological issues like those in El Nido are often caused by illegal logging, illegal fishing, and unregulated eco-tourism.

Moreover, Calo and Jilimani explained the risks of environmental activism, noting that their advocacy is frequently met with intimidation and red-tagging, while others have faced physical violence, death threats, and even killings.

Despite these dangers, Chan emphasized the need for “third-world solutions for third-world problems,” encouraging Filipinos to directly challenge unjust and illegal operations. To conclude, Arambulo called for the public to examine political candidates’ platforms and to vote wisely in hopes of resolving environmental issues.
