NATIONAL UPDATE: A Manila court has acquitted former lawmaker Arnolfo Teves Jr. and two others in a 2019 murder case involving a Negros Oriental board member. The Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 15 cleared Teves, Richard Cuadra, and Rolando Pinili, citing the prosecution's failure to establish a prima facie case.

However, Teves is still facing separate murder charges and remains detained over the 2023 killing of then Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo and nine others during an attack at Degamo's home.

Teves was expelled from the House of Representatives in 2023 after refusing to return to the Philippines to face his charges. He was later detained at a driving range in Dili, Timor-Leste, in 2024, but a local court initially blocked his extradition. Then, in 2025, Timor-Leste abruptly deported him, citing concerns that his continued presence posed a national security threat.

UNIVERSITY UPDATE: In a statement released yesterday, January 14, the Sanggunian Commission of Ateneans for Indigenous Peoples (CAIP) condemned the Armed Forces of the Philippines' (AFP) violence toward the indigenous Mangyan-Iraya communities in Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro, after "indiscriminate aerial bombing, strafing, and gunfire" killed five civilians on January 1.

The CAIP mentioned that the military operations severely disrupted the Mangyan-Iraya’s livelihood, as livestock died and over 750 residents were forced to evacuate. Notably, the operation, which was executed after the AFP encountered the New People's Army, killed three children of the Mangyan-Iraya indigenous community and two student-researchers.

Moreover, the commission stated that this incident reflected a broader pattern of violence against the Mangyan-Iraya, including arbitrary arrests, abductions, and extrajudicial killings.

Ultimately, the CAIP called for an independent investigation and humanitarian mission looking into the welfare and security of the Mangyan-Iraya community. The commission also urged the Ateneo community to stand with the Mangyan-Iraya and other indigenous communities facing militarization, displacement, and land grabbing.

UNIVERSITY UPDATE: The Scholars’ Sectoral Board (SSB) issued a statement on January 10, which called on the Ateneo administration to “refrain from advancing the proposed unified grading system” until meaningful, University-wide consultations are conducted in consideration of the scholars' realities.

The proposed grading system, formally introduced on November 21, 2025, seeks to standardize grading by adding an A– (3.75 for 91–95) and raise the cutoff for an A across Ateneo undergraduate and graduate schools. The system is planned for implementation by AY 2027–2028.

While the initiative aims to standardize grading systems, SSB shared that there is “no substantial evidence” the changes would improve academic experience or student well-being.

The board also warned in its statement that stricter grade thresholds could heighten academic pressure, narrow the margin for error, and intensify competition, which would disproportionately affect scholars who rely on stable academic standing for continued opportunities.

With this, the SSB challenged the Ateneo administration to ensure its actions are grounded in cura personalis and prioritize genuine care for students.

OPINION: Course shaming is an unfamiliar term, but an experience not uncommon to many. With so many courses to choose from, there comes an obvious competition of whose field is more superior than the other.

OPINION: GenAI has been a pressing concern among the art community. While the technology is indeed innovative, overreliance on the tool may contribute to sacrificing bits of what makes us human in the first place.
