Degradation of coastal habitats and environmental damage, depletion of marine resources, poverty among municipal fisherfolk, and low productivity of aquaculture are the major problems that beset the Philippine fisheries sector today. Despite the implementation of Coastal Resource Management (CRM) programs, it is ironic that the richness of our fisheries and coastal resources has not led to an increase in the catch per unit effort of the fisherfolk. This study was conducted to determine the knowledge, attitudes, and practices among fisherfolk towards CRM in the Philippines.
This descriptive, comparative, and correlational research study surveyed 399 fisherfolk in the coastal barangays using a validated and reliable researcher-made instrument. Results showed that the awareness, behavior, and participation of fisherfolk regarding CRM, when considered as a whole, were โhigh.โ This means that locals are knowledgeable, have a positive attitude, and actively participate in CRM activities. However, despite these results, the coastal areas in the Philippines continue to be vulnerable to degradation from overfishing, pollution, and climate change, which impacts the health of coastal resources. With this, local government units need to strengthen their environmental protection campaigns by designing education and outreach programs that encourage sustainable behavior, foster community participation in maintaining biodiversity, and promote effective marine management.
