A NEW BEGINNING!

I am immensely proud to finally share with you that I have recently been appointed as associate professor of the National Defense College of the Philippines (NDCP).

Here's a photo of my oath-taking last February 28 which was facilitated by NDCP President Lt. Gen. Ferdinand M Cartujano PAF (Ret).

I know I have a lot to learn in this field, but I am confident in what I can contribute to NDCP's prestigious Master in National Security Administration (MNSA) program given my background in media studies and history.

I am humbled to have the trust, confidence, and support of so many people as I embark on this new chapter of my professional career. Let's all aim for even bigger goals for the future!

I wish it's possible to take down one evil without empowering the other one.

Get well soon, Pope Francis!

He is a much-needed beacon of light in this world full of anger and resentment.

PQSC 2024

I presented my paper titled “The Issue of Abortion in Samantha Lee’s Film Billie and Emma (2018)” during the recently-concluded 2024 Philippine Q***r Studies Conference. I originally wrote this for my Media 301 class under Dr. Eulalio Guieb earlier this year.

Directed and written by Samantha Lee as an entry to the QCinema International Film Festival, “Billie and Emma” was top-billed by Zar Donato as Billie and Gabby Padilla as Emma. Although the film is rightfully described as a coming-of-age queer-themed movie, abortion is an integral part of its plot.

This essay argued that “Billie and Emma” reflects the generally-awkward, if not downright negative, attitude of the Philippine society toward sex-related topics including homosexuality, premarital pregnancies, and abortions.

And although the film can be considered a subversion of this conservative norm by virtue of its nuanced take on abortion, such efforts are few and far in between, and oftentimes have severely limited reach.
