On this day, we honor the memory of Chad Booc and the New Bataan 5, who were massacred by state forces while teaching Lumad communities. They fell victim to relentless red-tagging by the state and military, which led to their tragic and unjust killing.
Booc was an alumnus of the Department of Computer Science. He was a persistent advocate for social justice, choosing to serve urban poor areas and Lumad communities after graduating from the department. He volunteered in teaching Lumad children mathematics, helping organize makeshift schools and teaching programs for these communities.
Yet despite these selfless acts, Booc and fellow activists were consistently harassed and systematically branded as terrorists by state propaganda. He, along with fellow teacher Jurain Ngujo, health worker Elegyn Balong, drivers Tirso Añar and Robert Aragon, while in scout of potential Lumad school locations, was brutally assassinated under the guise of an “encounter” in Barangay Andap, New Bataan, Davao de Oro.
To this day, Chad Booc and the New Bataan 5 are denied the justice they deserve. We stand in condemning these acts of violence towards Lumad communities, and we continue to decry the human rights violations towards educators and community servants. Their legacy of service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.
