Japanās researchers at NICT, in collaboration with Sumitomo Electric, have shattered records with a staggering internet speed of 1.02 petabits per secondāenough to download the entire Netflix catalog in under a second ļæ¼. This was achieved using a standard-diameter 19-core optical fiber over ~1,800āÆkm, showing that existing infrastructure still has mind-blowing potential ļæ¼.
While this technology isnāt headed to home broadband just yet, itās a major leap toward ultra-fast global networks, undersea cables, and future 6G backbones ļæ¼. For now, itās a powerful tech demoābut one that hints at a future where buffering, long downloads, and lag could become relics of the past.
