VOLLEYBALL | Jaja Santiago stays on Japanese soil after signing with the Denso Airybees for the 2025-26 Japan S.V. League season.

The 6-foot-5 middle blocker, who carries the Japanese name Sachi Minowa became the second Filipina player to play for the club after Jia De Guzman.

But Filipino fans will not be able to see the two national standouts playing together in Denso as De Guzman already parted ways with the Airybees following a two-year stint.

Minowa last suited up for the Osaka Marvelous from 2023 to 2025 and concluded her time there with a championship last season.

Denso is also her third team in Japan's top-tier league following her debut with the Saitama Ageo Medics.

The 29-year-old Minowa will be helping a Denso team coming off a fourth-place finish in the 2024-25 season.

VOLLEYBALL | Thanks to the Europeans, the Filipinos learned valuable lessons they absolutely need in time for the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship.

Alas Pilipinas Men’s three-country training camp in Europe didn’t go to waste as they returned to Manila equipped for the great battle that lies ahead, especially Owa Retamar, who will primarily steer the direction for the nationals on the taraflex.

The former UAAP Finals MVP and Best Setter said facing giants from Morocco, Romania, and Portugal pushed them to the limit despite their feeling of inferiority.

“At first, I was a bit nervous because everyone here is so tall. We felt like high schoolers compared to them,” Retamar said.

But standing smaller sometimes creates a bigger and bolder mindset.

“But we’re happy because we realized that even if we’re smaller, we can still keep up with them,” Retamar said. “They have a height advantage, but we can match their skills.”

Whatever they learned, fighting against intimidating teams will manifest when they face Tunisia, Egypt, and Iran at the .

Alas’ Pool A rivals are not to belittle as their heights reach the ceiling as high as 6-foot-8.

“Our training camp has been exhausting, but it was so worth it. It helped us a lot,” added Retamar, hoping for the Philippines’ breakthrough in the Worlds.

The 25-year-old was the youngest player at age 19 when he stepped up as the main playmaker for the silver medal-winning Philippine team at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games held in the country.

Six years later, Retamar is now injecting guidance to the new bloods of setters in Eco Adajar and Elijah Tae-yin Kim, who are also expected to deliver stellar playmaking once selected for the final roster.

“The three of us really support each other, especially during games. We always talk about strategies to score quickly, so we’ve become a great trio on the court,” Retamar said.

Retamar, like the other 20 Alas pool members, is dreaming to make it to the Final 14 and be part of the historic participation of the Philippines in the volleyball spectacle featuring the 31 finest teams in the world that includes Olympic, continental, and world champions.

Tickets to the world championships—set September 12 to 28 both at the MOA Arena and Smart Araneta Coliseum—are available online via the official website at www.philippineswch2025.com. | via Dennis Hilanga/ RP2 Sports
