A strong magnitude-7.5 earthquake rocked Japan today at 15:53 PHsT, triggering a tsunami warning.

Television receivers in Japan received an Emergency Warning Broadcast System (EWBS) alert triggered by Japan's "Early Earthquake Warning" 「緊急地震速報」 System.

One reason the Philippines adopted the ISDB-T system is its EWBS capabilities.

LOOK: A Kantar Media report for the Department of Information and Communications Technology - DICT, dated December 17, 2024, shows that Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) has a pe*******on rate of 69% among households in Mega Manila, while 11% rely on Pay TV and 20% still use analog TV.

That means around 1.5 million homes, mostly from the DE socioeconomic class, will be affected when analog signals are shut off.

This year, the Analog Switch Off (A*O) will commence in Metro Manila, marking the start of the nationwide transition to digital TV.

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) plans to phase out analog broadcasts to ensure households benefit from clearer reception, more channels, and the Emergency Warning Broadcast System (EWBS) for disaster alerts.

DTV Pilipinas @ 15

Fifteen years ago, a group of television enthusiasts came together to form DTV Pilipinas, officially launching on January 1, 2011.

Since then, together, we have witnessed and documented key milestones in Philippine television.

From early digital TV test broadcasts, to the ceremonial ceremony in 2017, and most recently, the issuance of NTC Memorandum Circular No. 005-11-2025, also known as the 'Guidelines for the Switch-Off of the Analog TV Service in Mega Manila.'

Over the years, DTV Pilipinas has earned the trust of the broadcast industry—Broadcasters, engineers, and technicians, as well as the TV viewing public—by providing timely, accurate, and verified information on the country’s digital TV transition.

This year, television networks in Mega Manila will begin the shift from analog to digital broadcasting. Once again, DTV Pilipinas will be there as a witness, continuing our mission "To share knowledge about Digital Television with Filipinos."

No Filipino should be left behind. Let's all face the new era of Philippine television together, one moment at a time.
